71 CJ5 build

Got a fair amount of work done over the weekend. My uncle came up Friday night and helped knock out the A-Pillars. We drank a few beers and had a good time until we stripped out the nut on the clamp for the VersaNotcher. I cut out the nut and replaced it with a new one Saturday morning and got back to work.

I have another weekend free this weekend so I'm hoping to knock out some more tube work and maybe mount the seats. We'll see how it goes.

Got the cage done from the door bars up. Still need to add some some support underneath and tie everything in. Didn't quite get to seat mounts yet but I'll tinker around this week trying to get some of that done.

Really liking how the cage work turned out on this. Looks way different with the new tires too.

The 42s definitely changed the attitude of it. I'm glad I chopped the body off so far.

Started tying the front end all together last weekend. Got the links all built and front axle completely welded out. One of my buddies and I flexed it out and the front fender bars and fender are going to need reworked to clear the 42s. Might as well make a little extra room for some 43s for the future. Maybe this weekend I'll get the front end fixed so I can move on to something else.

Should I go ahead and weld the axle tubes while I have it pulled? Just heat up the cast real good and burn it in? Or is the truss enough?

I started working on placing rear shocks a couple of months ago and realized I made made my door bars too low. There was no way to get a 14" shock back there without hitting the frame or the tube. Finally I decided to jump in and get back to work on it. While I'm at it I may go ahead and boatside it.
The 1x2 board is about where the new tube will go.

I've been putting some time in on the Jeep the last week or so. I got the door bar moved up and braced and mounted the rear shocks. I'm starting to get better at notching but damn it takes forever to get it right. Just about the time I'm confident in my notch placement I do it back wards and have to start over!

Not much of an update but I did pull it out of the shop to get some fresh air. Finally flexed it out a bit so I could make sure everything clears. I need to align it and tighten up all the links. Time to start on seats and firewall. I got my seat sliders finally, just haven't had time to work on it. There's something about rolling it outside that got me fired up to work on it again.

Glad to see you are still plugging away at this build. Keep up the motivation.
I ordered a carrier bearing yesterday so I can start trying to work on the drive shafts. Plenty to do still but trying to get pieces in order.

Started finishing up most of the tube work the last couple of weeks. I haven't had any weekends free to work on it so I just try to do something every night. Brake and throttle pedals were ordered Thursday from Kar-Tek. I will have them this week and start figuring out mounting and packaging them.

Had to make the oil pan skid removable. It's still going to be tight to get the link bolts out. I will run a tube from the motor mount down to this hoop and make it removable as well. Hopefully there will still be enough room for driveshaft and exhaust! It's going to be tight!

I put the rig up to ride height to get a feel for it. It looks huge compared to full bump. It's 78" tall at the top of the cage. 21" belly height. 113" wheelbase. Waiting on T-Case shifter parts so I can finish mounting the seats. Then I can move on to important stuff.

Looking good. drool

That is not a bad roof height. What size tire? How much up travel ?

42" tires with about 6-6.5" up-travel. Picked up a piece of tube for the tie-rod today. Thinking about mounting my single ended, full hydro ram this week.

Took a day off of work yesterday and got my Atlas shifters installed, my seats finished mounted and the brake pedal mocked up. I am going to have to modify the pedal some so it's not sitting on the floor and so its at a more comfortable position. I'm going to grab some cardboard from work today and start mocking up some stuff for the interior.

Picked up some cardboard from work today. Going to start laying out some panels for the interior. Too bad you were closer yeager_0339!

Spent pretty much all day Sunday changing the Atlas shifter location to make the console work. Seems like I have no room for anything.

I broke the piece of crap China handle for the die when I was trying to thread the new handles for the knobs. Took the half inch die and welded it in some tube and made my own damn handle! Worked great.

Started making some more panels.

Thought I would tilt the shifter back a bit to help clear the transfer case shifters when pushing it into Park.

Set the fuel cell and cooler in the back. Gotta have my trail sodas. Looks like plenty of room for a couple small tool bags in there too. I'm going to draw up some templates for a fuel cell mount and cooler mount.
