Bucket list item checked off:

Me and a buddy bought a 1983 Toyota 2wd lwb pickup yesterday with a factory diesel. I think it is a 1L (non-turbo).

We plan to do a timing belt on it this week and any other maintenance it may need.
Anybody on here have much experience or knowledge with these old diesels? We really just bought the little truck bc they're hard to find in the US. After collectively owning dozens of 80's-90's toyotas, neither me or my buddy had ever seen one of these in person. Any tech chit chat would be appreciated

Don't know but if any info out there, goto IH8mud, look in the diesel section or various sections having those motors.

If you need any odd parts or stuff that folks can't figure out PM me, buddy does Toyota parts for living and speciality parts.

well, got the timing belt on and fired it up earlier this week. The little truck runs good. Tonight I believe we are going to adjust the valves and most likely clean it up a bit and sell. It would make a pretty cool 4x4 conversion or donor motor for a 4x4. The torque band comes in quicker than a gas 4 cyl of this era. My buddy is doing a 2rz swap in his 87 sas and I have a RE at the machine shop currently for my 85 so neither of us are really interested in this diesel motor. Word is the diesel and diesel bell housing will bolt directly to a W series and you're set.

just for reference.....
Timing belt: Gates #T084 $16.99
Valve lash: .010 intake/ .012 exhaust
