Older Tow Rigs

He's coming from a GAS smallblock GM 5.7. Pretty well set on a diesel of some nature to "make cool noises" while driving. Not a coal roller, but I think he's just ready for something vastly different than the old, tired 5.7.
Everybody knows that if you can't hear a turbo whistle than it's just not pulling.

Diesel excursion and f250, both 7.3's and run and tow great, excursion is nice to sleep in overnight, only complaint is small fuel tank on f250. Other than that I think a 7.3 has plenty of power with a few mods

If you mod the tank you can get another 4 gallons. It's still around 33 gallons at that point, but it does help.

That's his thinking too. I told him I'd zip tie a choo choo train horn to the front end so he can hear Turbo whine all the time...

I've got a 2001 F250 with the 7.3 and I won't lie that when I bought it 9 years ago it was purely to have the diesel sound and turbo.... I actually kind of use it now days. Towed my Toyota and it'll now tow the buggy. I did single shot injectors at 230,XXX miles and I've had 2 ridiculously priced transmissions built for it.

Way too much for what I do with it but it's now paid for. I'm at 251,000 miles and shooting for 500,000!

Based on the parking lots of various off-road parks, there are quite a few more older tow rigs out there.

Who else is rocking older tow rigs?

'96 dodge dually.. sporting a 12 valve cummins w/ 5 speed and 4.10 gears. Its old and loud but runs like a top. Its tuned up pretty good and doesnt break a sweat with 13k behind it :smoke:

While looking for my buddy an older tow rig, I may have gone way off the deep end...stumbled upon a 2002 F450, crew cab, 12 foot flatbed. Has the 7.3 with auto trans and 225k on the ticker. It's 2wd, but is a dually with good 19.5's. It is WAY more truck than I need to haul around my Jeep and tractor, but for the price I couldn't pass it up. It has a 4.88 gear in the Dana 80, so it's not a speed demon by any means, but for a truck this size it drives great and the wife enjoys driving it around!

Had to put this truck on a Commercial Policy despite being for Personal Use only, but full coverage is still cheaper than the wife's Tacoma.

Plan is to clean it up and use the truck for awhile until I find something better suited for my actual wants/needs.

I'd run it.

Will certainly let you both know if/when I decide to get a more realistic truck for my purposes. While I know having this big of a truck is more than I need, it sure is fun to drive for something this size.

yeah, so this thread got me to wondering what's out there in my area. I went to CL and searched 454, lots of boats and crap, but several 3/3 chevrolets, 3/4 and 1 tons. I have no real need for one of these trucks as I have a tow rig, but for some odd reason I want one and since they seem to be cheap.........couple examples.

I miss my old IDI. It was a 93 5 spd with 255k on it when I bought it, had 301k when it burned (freak accident). That was it on the right.

The light duty tow rig. 76 Chevrolet custom deluxe no power steering or ac. Only extras are 350 and automatic transmission. It's a 1 owner, belonged to my grandfather.
