Good deal. They actually make tools to install the rod seals that can help. I have found a little heat from a heat gun will make the seal softer and easier to install.

You should be able to do it in place. Like you said take the clevis off, take the hose off then unscrew the head with a spanner wrench. You will have a rod wiper (the seal you see from the outside), a rod seal, possibly a rod wear band and a outer head oring and backup. Just pay close attention...

I purchased a TH400 from PTC maybe two to three years ago. At the time Ed would not build it with a compression braking vb for off road. Maybe they didn't put one in it?

I always just pour it back into the jug and reuse it. It is a yellow color when its new, when it turns black it is getting weak and wont do much.

Evapo-rust works great. I use it at work fairly often. Just clean / degrease your parts before soaking.

Like Timjus said it has no internal seals that would stop it from working, just a shaft seal and housing seals to keep it from leaking externally.

Its probably a Eaton Char lynn valve. If so you will need to get a Eaton seal kit for it. Keep in mind when you reassemble it has to be timed correctly or it will act like hydraulic motor and try to rip your thumbs off! If you can send me some pics / numbers I can forward it to Eaton to see if...

Here is a pic of the Currie 35 spline 4:88 gears (top) compared to Dana 80 4:88s. If I was building a 60 I would go for the 35 spline pinion for sure.
