I just had this happen yesterday and thought that I would post it up. On the way home from running an errand the axle stub that I used for my hingle sheered and the tire carrier along with everything else swung out via the latch then came to a rest in the oncoming lane of traffic. Luckily there was no one around and I was able to pull over and drag the whole thing to the side of the road before someone came along. The axle stub was 1-1\16" thick where it broke, right were the bearing rode on the axle stub. I am not sure if it was already flawed or there was an early crack that finally broke as a result of the cyclic movement of the tire carrier. Regardless I am going to be using a double sheer design for the next version and attach a chain on the hinge side of the tire carrier to both stop the tire carrier when it swings out and as a saftey feature so that if this should ever happen again it will be attached some how to the vehicle and give me some time to pull over preventing an accident. Just for the record the tire carrier was built about 3 or 4 years ago. I think that I can bend the Hi Lift back on a using a press, or at least I hope so.
