Why do you stick with this hobby?

Last minute trip to Oklahoma to spectate and visit MashYerMullet atthe Outlaw racing event is exactly why I stay in this sport and always will. Brought some friends that are new to it and they had so much damn fun, I met some new peeps, it's just a great culture to enjoy and be around :woody:

Growing up my dad always had something to ride anything from dirt bikes, VW rail buggies, Jeeps, and the past 10 years or so 4wd tube buggies. So I guess it's just in my blood and I'm very grateful he raised me up around off roading. I was taught to ride a dirt bike before a bicycle so naturally I rode bikes up to around 2003 or so. After that i got into fox body Mustangs and modern LS powered cars for a few years all while having some type of Jeep or Toyota to wheel. I got bored with cars and started getting more into 4wheelin and that's what I love to do. I honestly like it more than anything I've ever done. I currently have a beater XJ, a grand cherokee buggy, and a new single seat rock buggy in the works. I really haven't got to meet but just a few people from this forum but everyone that wheels seems to be really good people. My dad still has a rig and that's another reason I really enjoy wheelin. Nothing like getting out in the woods and riding some good ol ruff trails, a lil hill killing and every now and then some rocks!

Bringing this thread back up due to this quote I found a couple of weeks ago. The same quote can be applied to most any hobby that costs money/time/energy etc, but I felt like the quote fit this thread.

"To enjoy this hobby, you must have a blatant disregard for smart financial decisions."

i was talking about this the other day to someone. They couldnt understand why I spent thousands of dollars to go slow and on something I can't drive everyday. It was kind of hard to argue with him about it. I've kicked the idea of drag racing around some, or drifting looks cool never done that intentionally.

I don't think it's worth arguing about it with people.
Either you get it, either you don't.

No matter what, it's my money soooo if you don't like how I'm spending it, GTFO.

In the same manner, I dont understand how people can spend thousands of dollars on gaming equipment or electronics. I also dont see how alot of people go through life without a hobby or outlet. Maybe that is why the divorce rate is so high.

I have ridiculous amounts of money in reloading equipment. So much so that even if I had 10,000 free bullets handed to me, I still wouldn't break even. But like so many other things we love, it is an obsession.

I know we've had discussions about how we got started, and how rigs have evolved, but what keeps you coming back?

Even in the off-road spectrum, why trucks/Jeeps/buggies vs SXS or ATVs or Dirt Bikes?

Seems like most other stuff is easier to haul, easier to own, etc.

I like building and modifying trucks, but don't currently have the time or $ to do it.

4wheelers and dirt bikes kinda seem dangerous after 10 years with a cage/harness...

Dirt, rocks, roots, camping, being in the woods, good friends old and meeting new, smell of a camp fire, or buzz of a welder trying to be able make it to Sunday on a Saturday morning. Most of all seeing how my only child loves it, and working on his **** box!!

I wonder this all the time. Hopefully since my rig is as done as it's ever been and as the boys get older, it can be something for the family. Last couple years it's been something I worked on and missed hanging out with the kids. They can't exactly lay under a nasty vehicle while you grind and weld stuff on jack stands

That's part of the reason I sold my last rig when my boy was little. I didn't have as much desire to go (I always preferred weekend long camping trips even to GMP which is 30 min away) and he was too small to enjoy it enough to dedicate the effort into it.

Now he's almost 6 and after I had @The Luke 's Jeep here for regear, and now I've got my old rig back I'm the shop doing a rear 4 link on it for @CarolinaCrawler1 , the boy has been hitting up momma for "a rock crawler for dad", and he asks me about it going pretty often.

So I might be building/buying another rig here in year or 2 after the new house gets finished. Thought about buying a sxs but I just can't get excited about them, even the high zoot fast ones.

We've got a good family friendly bunch to ride together in middle Tennessee. If not for that I would have gotten out already.

Poor financial decisions to a point are in the eye of the beholder. Would plenty of people say that about me and the copious amounts of cash I have put in my rig only to go beat the **** out it in the woods? Sure. But it's what brings me peace. So can you put a $ cap on peace? Same can he said for a lot of hobbies. No one bats an eye at Golf, what about fishing? All that stuff can add up. You love life once and it's not for long. Do it YOUR way.

I may have a yota rig that would interest you, when you decide to get you another one.
