I'm shopping for a 7.3 Excursion 4wd. Have a few already lined up to look at in the next few days, all have around 200k on them. This is my 1st diesel.

What kind of issues should I be looking for?

This will be my DD, kid hauler & jeep / camper puller

Blow by, how recent the trans was replaced, carfax to check mileage, general wear to prove mileage is accurate (brake pedal, seats, arm rests, etc), make sure they don't crank it before you get there bc you want to see how it starts when cold. A 7.3 with weak injectors will not crank cold.

With the 2006 and under Ford beware of MAJOR rust issues. Check the bottom of all four doors, inner rockers, inner rear wheel wells, front core support around the mounts. Ford does not offer the rockers for the Excursion any longer (rear), so that is costly. Rust and body repair can out weigh engine issues in a hurry... Good luck with your search.

Ive still got my 90 day trial of carfax from when I bought my truck a month ago. If you find one you like get me the tag number and I can pull the carfax. I am out of free VIN searches but it has unlimited tag searches til for a couple months.

Bottom rear of rear door jams under the plastic trim at the wheel well. Wheel well holds alot of salt and dirt there and rusts terribly. As mentioned before, bottoms of all doors.

ALOT of the Excursions have the body side moulding also, Be very cautious with whats under the trim!! We just sold one that looked AWESOME from first appearance. O BOY, it was weak! We did disclose all the rust issue and guy still had to have it???

My boss sent me this for sale ad for an excursion today, just wanted to share with y'all since we're talking about excursions. I'm still drooling over this one.

Re:

I considered a 7.3 excursion when I was looking for 8.1 suburbans then I realized I could probably by 3 suburbans for on 7.3 x. Those things are higher than camel ***** in Ohio and your still stuck with a hay wagon riding vehicle.

7.3's are the greatest... Lol. Blow by, how it starts cold and trans shifting are some things to take note of. They can run for a very long time but not if they were not maintained well.

Re:

Pipers sounds like a nice ride but I'd hate to buy a lifted rig just to lower it back down so it'll fit in the garage.

I test drove a 00 Wednesday & going back Sunday to look it over a little better.

It has Banks system but don't know what all that includes.
New Ford injectors 6k ago (2 were bad)
Pac brake exhaust brake
Firestone airbags on the rear
& a few other hauling upgrades

It has its share of dents & dings but otherwise a solid body
