14 bolt front build thread and tech help

Factory brake options list a 340mm and 347mm rotor. I assume go with the smaller unless there's a good reason not to. It's still bigger than what I am running now on my front 60 which is 319mm.

Turns out there's only one option. The 347mm is the front rotor. The 340mm is for the rear. Be sure when you're shopping for brakes to keep your years between 2005-2012. I use 2006 because according to Reid, they designed their knuckles off the 2005-2007 knuckle. Apparently Ford made some changes after 2007 that shouldn't affect part fitment but still, you never know. Here's an interesting piece of tech I'm pasting from an email I received from Reid.

Hi Andrew,
On the 8-lug trucks, Ford used one rotor size from 2005-2012, and then from 2012.5 to present they used a larger size. The 10-lug SuperDuty's used an entirely different setup. We based our knuckles off of the solid 2005-2007 knuckle. In 2008 Ford decided to change the knuckle casting by casting a "window" into the lower half of the knuckle to lose weight and reduce material costs, but dimensionally everything remained the same until the 2012.5 revision to larger brakes.

Sounds like if you're shopping for junkyard knuckles, 2005-2007 would be the ones to get. Aside from that digression, I ordered up my brake parts. Kept it simple using all stock components.
Rotors - Wagner BD126272E
Calipers - Wagner CRB140121 & CRB140120 (supposed to include hardware and mounting bracket)
Pads - Wagner MX1069
Total: $398.90 shipped from rockauto.com

I doubt dudes are factoring in their brake parts when talking total cost for a build but whatever, there it is.

What made you go with factory brakes instead of aftermarket?

Simplicity. Price. I've only ever used vatozone brake parts up to this point and I've always been happy with my brakes so no need to change now. Only aftermarket "kit" I know of is by Wilwood and it requires 20" wheels. Not saying there isn't other options out there but I didn't look that hard.

Got my big block RCV shafts ordered up. That's 40 spline inners, big bell w/stub, boots, and whatever else misc bullshit comes with it. Kit price was $3995 retail although I did not pay nearly that much. I got a great price through Skinny Pedal Racing (Mortalis5509). He worked with me for at least a week calling RCV and pricing various parts and answering questions. Hell even RCV isn't that familiar with this kit and several other vendors I talked to quoted the wrong **** all together. Tripp was great to work with and was the cheapest quote I received. RCV is going to ship everything but the inners, I wanted to have as much as possible in hand and since I won't know my inner lengths until the end, this seemed like a good option.

X2 Tripp is a good dude, best prices around for RCVs

B.A. dude. Looking forward to watching this thing handle some late night blacked out hill killings. booyang  :smoke:

Almost time to stop ordering parts and start assembling this turd. I plan to drop the axle off at the machine shop after labor day to get retubed.

I'll still be on 39s but I'd like to go to those new 42s if they work well and I win the lottery. Mine was re tubed 3.5x.5. crane C's solid knuckles and rcvs. 2 cucvs died to make my axles.

Very nice! Love the front truss too.

are you two still going to run the 39in bfgs with the 14b fronts ? jw

Yea, I am. Love the tire, had real good luck with them and my buggy was built around them. I would like to step up to the 42 Trep eventually because it seems like literally everyone I ride with is on the 43s now but I don't care enough to spend the $2800 or whatever it is.

Jduck on here cut all my trusses and made the steering mount. It's all super nice.

1) Obviously I don't need the ABS sensor. If you unbolt it, it leaves a nice hole in the side. What's the best thing to do here?

I think Rusty removed his, in the low budget rear engine build, and maybe threaded the hole for a plug to screw into. You could even add a grease fitting there and pack the bearing full of grease.

The yard didn't unplug my ABS sensors when they pulled my axle from the truck so the wires are ripped. I'm just going to cut them at the sensor and leave them in.
