I have a D-max issue also

I saw Mr.Leafsprings thread and forgot that I had not asked any of you all about this. So, here is the deal.

I recently had a ticking noise and figured it was an injector based off my CTS Balance rates, so I pulled out #6 since it had the high numbers. For some reason when I was in there I had a feeling to take #4 out too and compare them.

I took both to a local shop to have them tested. I'll try to post pics of the results in a minute. I have no idea what all that means but they told me that #4 was returning too much fuel and it made #6 look like it was bad, but it was actually #4 that needed replaced.

I bought a Bosch replacement from them but the noise never really went away. It might have been better for a little bit, but now it's back and the rates are showing high again too. I don't know if I need to have the computer reset or what I have to do next. I read some threads about the glow plug module stores the information??

Not sure it matters, but wanted to mention it:
#6 is harder to get to so when I put them back in, I put the NEW injector in the #6 hole.
I took the old #6 they told me tested good, and put it in the #4 hole. .

I've read a little about this years ago in regards to it being hard to pinpoint a bad injector because of this exact reason but I can't remember where I found the article that explained the tips and tricks for singling out the injector or injectors that have developed an issue. Probably a dumb question but did you mark the 4 and 6 injectors accordingly to be sure you didn't get them mixed up and / or accidentally install the bad injector back in the truck.

side topic but I believe I saw you driving in at GMP several months back. Good looking dually and that turbo you put on it sounds so sweet.

I engraved a 6 on one injector incase the shop I had test them did just what you mentioned. Coincidentally, the 6 ended up being the good one and I did in fact get it back along with a new one. They kept the other as a core. I decided today that I'm pulling them all and sending to Exergy for testing per recommendation of Danville performance. I like this truck but I've never had so many issues with one vehicle. Costly issues at that. It was a one owner old man truck who took immaculate care of it so it's not had a hard.life. I rarely drive it and baby it when I do, so it's not breaking from abuse. I'm a GM loyalist though, so I'll stick it out for now. Too much money in it to sell out.

Are you sure this isn't normal type writer tick on a dmax? I have one with 300,000 miles and sometimes the tick catches my attention and then I forget about it for another year. Did you happen to change the oil recently.
 
You need a scanner to shut down the injectors one at a time. Then its easy to see which one is making the noise. It could also be a valve lash problem. Its not common but is possible. Mark is a good guy at Danville.
 
Yeah a valve adjustment would have been done when they put your motor back together after the new hg's were installed so that might be worth checking. Hopefully they don't find many problems with your injectors but I wouldn't be surprised if they do find some wear issues. Today's low sulfur diesel is really hard on injectors from what I've read. My lbz has just under 8,000 hours on it now and I don't doubt that my injectors have developed some internal wear and higher return rates. Either my number 4 or number 6 injector gets a little ticky when I haven't run some cleaner additive in a few months but it always seems like as soon as I do the tick goes away.

I don't think so. Only because it's not been this loud except when my #5 injector went out. Once replaced, it's been quiet until recently and according to the shop who tested them, it's another bad injector. So that's why I'm thinking it's not normal.

I'm hoping it is not valve lash. Like Tallnate said, Danville would have done that when they did HGs but I guess it's possible. When #5 went earlier this year, they must have thought valve lash was possible because they had me bring it back up to them. This time they just want to send injectors out and have them all checked. guess I'll be pulling those this weekend. Crossing my fingers it's dirt or just 1 bad one, because I'm not wanting to pay for 8 injectors.
