My buddy used to race cavaliers at wartburg he might know some tricks.

We have two teams of 2 cars. So 4 cars, 9 total guys involved.
And those numbers are completely in check to maybe a little low.
Granted you get to count your time at $0 but just the reality of it.

I do appreciate the offer to buy the race ready car. But as an old dirt tracker, I want to build a car that will finish, much like you off road endurance racers and KoH guys, and unlike TC and Cole that just hop in a Bomber and go. (No offense, I know it's not that easy.) Thrill of the hunt, I guess. That, and it's been YEARS since I built a racecar from the ground up. I just need to make sure I don't build a dirt track car or crawler out of habit.

I remember our 1st race and being so worried about passing tech. And then the judges inspected the car then really dug into the cage. Pulling out feelers for the joints on top of the cage under the roof. I do legit work, but didnt stop me from sweating it.
So they turn around and say something to the effect of; who built this cage? And Im like me. Jay Lamm and Judge Scott walk to me, shake my hand, and say along the lines of best new car cage we've seen in a very long time, you offroad guys sure know how to fabricate.

We never really fit into the hipster/themer teams, we just like to race.

That's what I'm afraid of, OVERfabricating. I'm used to building something to beat on rocks or slam into the back of someone intentionally to let them know I'm faster and they need to move. Next thing you know, I have a 5,000lb Cavalier. molaugh
 
Been wanting to try LeMons for years, just never fully committed to getting a car ready and putting together a team. Maybe one day I'll finally do it. Definitely post a build thread and keep us updated.

Just like so many things, it takes a dynamite group of guys that are willing to give more than they get (no alpha dicks shitting on people and no whiners) and people who can MAKE free time and spare money. Most groups have friends, but most friends have guys with different ambitions and desires and priorities.

Bingo, we all knew we were in for the long haul. I drew names out of a hat when doing the driver schedule. It was never equal time. Someone always got more seattime, someone always got less. When it broke, we resumed with who's ever name was in the next slot. Sometimes, guys didnt want back in, sometimes we played paper/rock/scissors to get back in. If the schedule ended up with a "SLUFF" spot at the end, say a :45 min stint that was kinda a vote. Like who got short shifted last race, or what have ya.

Sometimes guys didnt pull their weight, and post race they got called out. Not everyone has their A-game on everyday, sometimes you suck.

Once the cars were built and a few races of shake down, only prep is tires, and brakes, and just go over everything. I cant count how many races we hardly touched the cars between. But that came from learning how to drive and not use up the car. Dont cook brakes, dont, rev shift, drive 80% and finish 100%, and amazing how often that puts you on top.

BTW, I'm at OBO on our Cherokee... just saying!

I made this thread and had the car chosen, because it was free, out of eagerness to get on the track. But after some thought, a Cavalier socks balls. My train of thought now is mid-size, vaguely sporty, SBC, like a Camaro, Monte Carlo, S-10, which in poor shape can be had for the $500...

Thoughts?
 
S10 with a 4.3. Seems super simple and very easy to work on. Could also make it fit an offroad theme. Could it be made to handle well?

Minitrucks used to be pretty popular in SCCA/Autocross. Surely some of their set ups could be translated to a lemons car without too many red flags or additional costs.

I ran one at Hockenheim, did pretty good. After a 15 minute session the brakes were getting good and toasty, so vented rotors and good pads are a must.

Again, wanting to run a free Cavalier was like having a free Jeep Liberty and wanting to run KoH. Just because you can doesn't mean you should. With a SBC, any trouble will be fuel, fire, or mechanical failure. The Cavalier may start running like **** and it be ANYTHING. Crank sensor, O2 sensor, MAF, etc., I want to be able to diagnose, repair, and get back on the track quickly.

Am I wrong?
