Big Block in a Toy? (possible?)

Alright, ignoring the question of "Why" and throwing practicality out the window: Any of you fit a big block (chev or the like) into a 4runner, or Toy pickup?

I know there will be fun issues with the firewall, radiator (space) and weight. Aside from that, and some block hugging exhaust manifolds, what other considerations should one make *if* he were to go down this road?

I know FJ's have space, but that's another vehicle.

60's--nothing else will stand up to the amount of torque no matter how light you are on it...

I have seen it done but its alot of work to make it fit right.---its a wide motor...
 
Small blocks can be built to produce mass torque too, and they fit much better. Largest engine I have ever seen in person in a toy was a 400 sb chev.

I was more impressed the 383 stroker than the 400. But both those setups are the same as far as the blocks went.. But yes you are right a SB can be done and produce just as much but you still lack the rotational mass that a big block has with can eiser casue parts to go boom,lol....

Yes, the 383 is a better engine. A few years ago my buddy Dean wanted to pull the 900+ hp 355 sb out of his chevelle and put it in his toy:haha: Good thing he thought better of it.
 
Yep. Someone put a 468 into a BII with the stock alxes and t-case. Didn't break anything either. Of course... he was running 30" mall terrians to so they didn't instantly let go. :D

Wow, you guys are on it.

It is going to be sweet once the board is stable.

Note: I have no fear of cutting crap up. Obviously the body will get nice and trimmed up. (the body I dont even own yet)

Alright... Say I have a 60 and a 14 bolt and the drivetrain to handle it. (which I mostly do, still need a 203 and the doubler bits).

The later question will be: Do I spend the cash at Crashes place to go 4 link / 3 link with some kind of coil setup or should I get some slinky leaves for simplicity (along with hydro assist / crossover)?

* I take you guys get the drift on where I am headed sometime in the future...
 
It sounds like you want to build a trail truck... the question is then... other than freak value.. why big block it? That's gonna be a PITA to keep cool when crawling. A big block would be more usefull for a mud runner.

Ok--you have the right mind set for this.


But I would just run leafs for now to keep it simplistic--your going to have your hands full just getting the powertrain done. From experiance bite of as litle as posable and wheel it and upgrade as your needs grow...
 
Yah, full trail rig. No more poser crap. I want something that likes pain.

Big block primarly since I have an low mileage EFI chevy sitting in my garage. Not "built" persay, but it has NEVER overheated and is just a basic easy to work on engine. The headers get silly hot, melting wires, etc. etc. The water temps are just fine though.

I have this big 4 core radiator I would use, ideally with the stock fan and my electric fan for my tranny cooler blowing through it. Mounting it in front of the engine might be kinda fun.

I do realize a 350 makes more sense, which of course I could sell this engine and go that direction. None the less, its kind of fun to see what options you have. I still like the big block torque. (I suppose thats like saying I like money....)

The first thing that comes to mind is the width of the rad. Measure stuff out and see if the rad hits the headlights..the overflow and washer bottle will definately have to be moved. I wonder if a toy frame could deal with the torque?
 
Good point Bunk. I am still in way early planning phase.

I figure I will tear off all the front body and start with the core, engine placement (re-inforcement), steering box placement, etc.) Later, I will work on figuring how to get the tin stuff around everything else. I really want to keep the rig as low as it can be, so I doubt much fender will be left.

I am not looking to eliminate all the fine Toy body and go all jungle gym, its just I prefer to get things done "right" the first few times (part of why I am asking you guys who actually know what they are doing).

As to the frame, I figure some good thick chunks of steel and some bracing will do ok. Probably do some kind of tube engine cradle that integrates with whatever bumper is in front. I am still leaning towards internal cage for strength, although I like the idea of some integrated or external tube that helps prevent windshield shattering. I do want something that can keep its occupants somewhat dry (since I have a little girl as my winch buddy), doors off in summer.

Ok, going a bit off topic. Back to the engine question. Aside from the width, the adaptors for the chevy engine mounts should allow a somewhat easy engine install in the right location (well, "right" being relative)?

First off i am building a mild build chev 350 right now if yer interested? If you are you could come choose what performance peices you want in it cause its my senior project so the parents will be paying hahahaha:D:flipoff:. But ya we could build ya a sweet 350 to throw in there if you want or you could tell me what you want in the motor anyway just as a back up.

Secondly, i should have a plasma and welder soon so if you want to trade stuff for my time i will be more than willing to do any fab/tube work and i can bend tube at school and they have those nifty tube master things so you can get the correct line on where to cut your tube. I think we have a notcher too:flipoff::D

I think the 454 you got would be cool but lots of work trying to cram it in there when you could get comparable power out of the 350 i have out back, its a 4 bolt so it has a higher heat tolerance :D. Well thats my 2 cents

I wouldnt be giving it to you for one there would be a price just severely discounted cause you help me a lot:;

i want to put it in my truck acctually, but im not sure yet the jeep would be cool but no very practical and there would be a lot of frame reinforceing but its a possiblilty
 
A big block chevy will physically fit once you remove the fenderwells and run fenderwell exit headers. If you measure the exhaust port width and frame width you'll see what I mean, it just aint gonna happen....


I know a guy that runs a yota with a 440 with an air shifted lenco and divorced 205 on 3/4 tons and 39.5 boggers. It fit good as the mopar engines are MUCH smaller than a chevy.. even a 460 would fit better....
