Iv got an old 22re with a rear main leak. I pulled the seal and the crank is grooved where the seal rides. Ive seen this alot on pinion/tcase flanges and sometimes sanding the groove out works.
Anyway I was thinking about sanding the metal edge of the new seal or doubling up the seal housing gasket, in an attempt to get the seal to ride in a new spot:redneck:. Anyone tried this?

I believe there are sleeves available, but I was told its not uncommon for them to leak.

As for the age of the motor, all I know is its an 85+ block/head

I like sleeves. Put Loctite or UltraGrey under it to seal it to the crank.

I have noticed that some sizes of "speedi sleeves" are HUGE money now.

If the seal is more than 12 or so years old its probably been updated.
