Just asked him he said it came out of a 77

If it came from a '77 then no way it can be a 500, as '76 was the last year for the 472/500 block. In '77 Cadillac introduceed the 425. Looks similar to the 472/500 but is 100lbs lighter, same stroke as the 472 but much smaller bore.

This is what he wrote me in the email.. If your interested I can get you in touch with him about it.

It was running and driving when it was pulled (77 Calais I think) but that was 5+ yrs ago. Should be ok with fresh fluids and it has been stored inside.

I've got a pile of them, hence how I know whats what on big block caddys.
If it was a '70-73 legit 500 I'd be all over it.
But no way would I take a flyer on what doesn't appear to be what is advertised. i.e. trying to sell a '77 425 as a 500 when there was no 500 in '77.

He said it was from caddy Calais and according to wikipedia
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cadillac_Calais they made them up to 76 with the 472/500 engine. So maybe he was off a year and its a 76 instead of a 77 ???. Im just going off what he's told me.. trying to help out a coworker thats helped me in the past thumb.gif

500's did end production in 1976. 472's ended in '74.

Most 472's & 500's have a cast number of 5200. 6200 can also be a 500. Some early 472's have a different cast number & cannot hold a 500 crank & have smaller oiling passages. These are 6238. Later 425 blocks look similar but have a raised box cast into them on the driver side just above the bellhousing beside the oil pressure sender. It looks out of place. These 425 blocks are cast number 9110. Best i can tell from the pictures this engine does not have the raised box I am speaking of.
