Looking for a new Tool Box

I was looking around at tool boxes and came across one at harbor freight. Have any of you ever owned a harbor freight tool box. Are they worth a crap or not. I also looked at one from home depot. I am not sure if they are a good box. I have read reviews on both of them and both have mixed reviews. I am going to be using this in my garage at home so the tool box does not have to be Snap-On quality. I currently have a six drawer craftsman without the ball bearing draw slides. It is full and have no where else to put tools. I will use the box on occasion not everyday but want a descent box. Let me know what you think about the boxes or a different box that you may have or had in the past..

The harbor freight stuff is pretty decent. I have both sizes of the roll around mechanic carts, one at work and one at home. A co worker just got 2 of the big bottom box roll around for his garage. They are actually nice

Have you looked on Craig's list? You can get some really nice used boxes and may get some tools that you can keep or resell if you don't need them.

Carquest has some remline brand that i have had for 14 years and it has been good and was well priced

I checked out the DeWalt set up at Home Depot saturday night. For $500 it looked and felt pretty good. I really liked the open space on top and the massive drawer on the bottom. It had drawer liners in it too. I have to say its as good if not better than the 15+ year old Craftsman ball bearing chest I have now.

The HF boxes are pretty good. I have one, my dad has two. I don't work out of it every day but for home garage use its perfect. They also have some decent boxes at Costco that you may want to check out.

I'd just go look at the HF boxes in person to decide, I don't think you'll be disappointed with the price with the coupons.

44" HF boxes run on sale all the time. Do a google image search for it. They are nice for the money.

I have the HF US General drawer open top tool box/cart and it's badass for the $. I bought it on sale and it's as high quality as one needs. Ball bearing drawers, sturdy construction, etc. Serves it's purpose as good as any. I wouldn't be afraid to buy any US General tool boxes.

I have the 56" bottom box from HF in my shop. I don't work out of it every day, but I wouldn't hesitate to. I'm very happy with it. I'm just waiting for me having the extra cash, and HF having the matching top chest on sale to happen at the same time.

During the day I play a maintenance mechanic/electrical and instrument tech. at a fairly large chemical plant. All of our boxes there are Proto industrial series boxes that the company splits cost with us 50/50 on. IMO the HF boxes are as good if not better quality than my Proto box.

I have had the harbor freight 44" top and bottom box for a few years now and have had no problems with them. They are great for the money.

Their boxes are nice...

I'm not giving more for a box than the value of the tools in it... especially for a home garage where it may only get opened a few time a week on average. A decent ball bearing slider mid-low end box should suffice just fine.

Pretty insane what people will pay for snap on boxes.

I fully understand buying good high quality TOOLS, but a box? It's just sheet metal and drawer sliders. Unless you have multiple people working out of it, every day, all day, and are rolling it around a shop, loading it on and off a trailer or truck regularly, no sense in spending THOUSANDS of dollars for the same size box that you can get at HF for a few hundred.

My brother paid 2,500 for a nice used snap on box several years ago, Yankster on here bought one of the harbor freight boxes about the same time, I swear I couldn't tell that much difference between the two.And Yankee saved 2,100 versus the used box

The Harbor Freight boxes are great, and the price is just a bonus. The steel seems quite a bit thicker than the ones at the home improvement stores.
I haven't had any issues with mine.
Cheap box and expensive tools for the win!

I was looking into the same thing a year or 2 ago. The general consensus I got was if you are going to spend less than $2k just get the HF box. I got the 44" and the roll cart and couldnt be happier. I dont work out of mine every day but I wouldnt hesitate to. I checked out the lowes and home depot offerings and at the time they werent even close in quality and they cost more. I dont think you will find a better box for the money.

I have one of the hf 44" boxes at work and love it. Has double slides on the deep drawers, all the drawers are smooth. If you look at the online reviews the hf box is at the top of the list for bargain boxes, even coming in better than craftsman and kobalt.

If you use the coupon, and then join the inside track club you.can get it for less than $300

I've had Craftsman, traded up to Blue Point (cheap Snap-On), traded up to Snap-On. Not a one difference but size. But I'm a dumbass for offroad parts, so I traded the $3k Snap-On box for some coilovers because I quit wrenching for a living. Now I'm back in it after 4 years off, and I bought a Kobalt (Lowes) and haven't looked back. If I had to recommend money vs. quality, I would lean towards Kobalt. Probably get a deal if you get a Lowes card to pay for it.
