Is there any way to know if a np205 is short input or long input without pulling it out of the vehicle? I know there are different years for the th400 and the 205 that had long and short inputs.

I could be wrong, but I believe the adapters where different between the two. In my old buggy I had the round pattern 205 and it had the long input. It's simple to swap it over to the short. The 205s with figure 8 adapters for a TH400 should have the short input. The round pattern 205s are also pretty rare from what I've seen.

^^ I think that's correct. My th400 adapter and 205 was figure 8 and short input.

Y'all are correct. In factory configuration round pattern 205's are 32 spline long female. Also all round bolt pattern 205's are 32 spline long input regardless of which transmission they come behind. 465, 400 or 4l80. 32 spline short came in figure 8 style adapters, they only came behind 400's. It is a year model difference that started in in mid 80's. Those trucks still had either style depending on what Chevy had had at the assembly line..
