Rockwell Question??

Hate to ask stupid question but here goes, I have not had a Rockwell apart yet. The guy I bought them from said they were open but If I jack the tires off the ground you can not turn just one tire!! They both are pulling in the same direction as if it is welded or spooled? Is the Rockwell set different then other rear gears? Thanks. Any good threads on welding a Rockwell would be appreciated?

Some Rockwells came from the factory with Detroit Lockers in them. 99% of those axles were in trucks that were purchased by the State as forest department trucks. Also 99% of those axles will have been painted yellow.

If its not one of those trucks then it's open and just a tight set of spiders so it will spin both sides.

Rockwell's are a double reduction unit and not like your typical ring and pinion set-up. You do have a ring and pinion, but also a large bull gear. The inside of the diff. does house a set of spider gears. Check the pics:
