Digital dash

Been talking to these guys :

http://www.mod7ce.fr/auto/F_frame.html?http://www.mod7ce.fr/auto/F_home.html

It's a french company that makes custom dashes. I'm trying to define with them an element-proof package that would include the data that matter to us offroaders (water temp, oil press, trans temp, fuel press, tach, alarms) in a simple way with no programming etc.

They offer billet machined housings and a bunch of custom options provided that we get a minimum quantity ordered. Prices are in the standards of the industry or maybe a little bit cheaper, about $1000 for a complete system that includes sending units.

I'll see if there is enough interest once they've got a firm pricing ready.

I've heard you can upload your own images to display as a warning indicator. Can you confirm this? Being able to flash titties when I hit the rev limiter might just be the deciding factor for me on one of these.

Yes, that is true. Everything is customizable you can completely redesign each screen, layouts, graphics, backgrounds, etc if you have the time. There is a facebook group dedicated to people creating and swapping designs. AEM offers the software for free on their website. Companies like Motec charge for it.

Baller. That's the future right there. Was a lot more of these products shown at SEMA this year.

Agreed. Installing junk generic sending units and running inaccurate analog half sweep gauges when your PCM is already monitoring and reading out all the info you need in a very precise way is kind of like buying an LS motor and converting it to a carb. I honestly won't have that much more $$$ into this than buying nice Autometers and I end up with a way better end result.

I'd like to know the reasons why you chose the AEM unit over the stand-alone display that Holley EFI offers. I've looked at both, but I was leaning toward the Holley EFI unit.

The Holley display is nice. It works great in conjunction with their hardware/EFI products and I've seen it in action on my friends buggy that is running Holley EFI. But, I've heard some horror stories of people trying to get it to work with 3rd party PCMs and Holley tech was not real interested in helping if it was not their hardware. I liked how AEM is actively developing for and supporting 3rd party hardware and the flexibility you have within the dash creator software. When I started my research AEM did not even have Mast on their list and they essentially developed the layout for me. It is now listed on their website as a supported Manufacturer. Hell AEM even supports Holley EFI. Here is the list, they're constantly adding to it.

That all being said there's nothing wrong with the Holley, if I was running a Holley EFI kit I would probably have gotten their dash.

edit: One of the more powerful features with the Holley, if you're running their EFI is the ability to tune on the fly without a laptop.

This is the only gauge a real man needed back in the day

I never understood the need for a tach?

maybe for diagnostics at some point, but who actually looks at a tach?

The motor starts sayin "NAH NAH NAH NAH NAH" when it wants you to let up...

I've never ran a tach in a off-road vehicle. I'm gonna try out this shift light on my new buggy, like u said no one looks at a tach but a light will catch your eye

I've been looking at the Holley unit as well but didn't see much information about how well it's sealed for offroad use. Another issue I was looking at was if I run Holley EFI and AEM dash I don't think there's a way to get a fuel gauge because the fuel gauge wires directly to a Holley dash and not the computer. AEM dash needs the fuel sending unit on the can bus.

Holley's website states "Weather resistant aluminum housing with flexible mounting options". I can't locate where/if they call out an IP rating.

Holley's stand alone dash kit includes an I/O adapter. I/O10 (which is terminal 13 in the included connector) is dedicated to the fuel sender. The display has preset resistance windows you can choose from as well as a custom resistance option.

Yep. The AEM specifically says IP65. I could not find a spec on the Holley other than "weatherproof aluminum housing."

As for the fuel, I purchased this add-on from AEM to monitor my TH400 trans temp via the dash. It will do a ton more but I really just wanted it for trans temp.

Thanks for the response. I looked at the AEM unit. It's a sweet setup, but it does way more than I need. At $1300 plus another $350 for the CAN sensor module to use it with my factory injection, it was more than I really wanted to spend.

Since I'm using the factory pcm and harness, I'd be interested to hear from anyone on here that has first hand experience with the Holley dash.

I'm all into the AEM unit for $1318 including the CAN module. Got it through a buddy that wholesales their line. Call this cat if you want to pick his brain about the standalone Holley. He was not happy trying to use the Holley dash with his GM crate motor and electronics. He made several posts about it. His page is a good follow if you like badass sand rails. He builds them turn key so he's not a backyard hack.

Wow! Thanks for sharing. Based on hat guy's experience as well others that commented, it appears that the Holley unit could leave me regretting that decision. It looks like I need to reconsider the AEM dash.
