Breaking the bead! On da trail

So last time I was out. I had to switch a tire between rims. Landspeeder had some harbor freight $5 tire spoons which helped. ( I now own 4 of these) I did the old lay the tire on the ground and put a 2x4 on the side of the tire then drive up the 2x4 with a second rig to break the bead. My tsl's and Mrw rims the head did not want to break.
So my tech question is. On the trail or away from the shop how do you bust your bead?

Re:

Drop the tire flat on the ground slightly under the edge of a trailer or a rig and sit a high lift base right up against the rim on the tire. Jack up until it pushes the tire off the rim, flip and repeat.

I always just drive on the tire with my truck, no wood. Sometimes if its being a bitch it is nice to have a friend rotate the tire for you.

Re: Breaking the bead!

Yeah we drove on it for a while without the wood with a second rig to no avail. Then decided on the wood to push right next to rim.

Re: Breaking the bead!

Bottle jack under the skid works good, doesn't seem as sketchy as a high lift either. It's even how I change mine at the shop. I've also lowered the brake drum down on them before when I was in a big bind. I know none of you have drums anymore though molaugh

Re: Breaking the bead!

Need to include "on the trail" in the title of the thread. Carry on

There is a video linked in the original post of that unit. Nobody has mentioned it. Have you used it?

Yes, all I have used at the shop for 10 years or so. I little different than the pic, but essentially the same. Got it at Gardendale Performance.

I have an air over hydraulic version of that last one and you definately wouldn't want to use it on any wheel you wanted to avoid scratching.

Probably wouldn't work with rock rings either.

My buddy used to work for Wingfoot and changed commercial tires on the side of the road. He was all about a duck bill hammer and just swinging away. Works great until you smack the wheel.

I worked at a trucking company one summer... I don't miss swinging a 10lb duckbill.

It is pretty satisfying when you get a perfect swing and drop a bead.

I'd hate to try it on regular tires.

Semi truck wheels don't have safety beads
