FL60 Sportchassis???

Anyone on here know anything about Frieghtliner FL60's?
I'm looking at a Crewcab Sportchassis with a 3126 Cat (300-hp) and 6-speed allison. Very low miles, very good shape. But I have zero experience with these trucks.
I remember way back in the day Travis Snyder "Rockwild" had a Freightliner box truck and I thought and he posted up info on what to look for and avoid but damn if I could find it.
Rearend gears to want or not want? Any things to look for on these motors, and tranny's.

Any input would be huge on what to look for.

Not looking for a box truck, the one in question comes with a trailer. I know the scoop on trailers thumb.gif and you know this man, so I have zero worries or questions on that end. But its a package deal and based on price I'm willing to do it but stupid big trucks I dont know **** about. Hoping one of y'all do.
I havent found **** online except RV people talking about how to title them.
 
Both services trucks me and dad run had that motor in them. Mine had 46,000 mileswhen i sold it and i still have dad. It has 325,000 miles and who knows how many hrs of idle time since the air comp and crane are on the pto. I would say equal to a million. Only problem with motor was when it had about 5,000 miles on it something went wrong with the cam. We tore it down and put in a new cam and have not had any trouble with anything else.
 
I don't know a lot about the FL60, but the 3126 cat engine is very dependable with reasonably low maintence
 
I researched them quite a bit before buying my Class A pusher. I'd say get a FL with a 8.3 Cummins. The lil Cat isn't even as big as an ole 7.3
Anyway mileage appears to be better and I know the power is...

thats good info. What years did they come with the Cummins? I know the new ones come with a Mercedes Benz diesel.

Idk. I'd have to look, but for comparison sake let me throw this at you

On my club's Arkansas Ultimate Adventure this summer, we went to Reno NV, The Rubicon, Moab UT, Durango CO and then home about 4800 miles of traveling. I have a 42' Class A pusher with an 8.3 Cummins and Allison. I Boondocked (ran my diesel generator) for 15 days of the trip and stayed at a RV park 5 days ( on their power). I used the generator while driving to run the AC in the coach and towed a 38' trailer with a JK unlimited Rubicon and a Buggy on as well. I got an average of 6.6 mpg on the WHOLE trip running 70+ mph (and faster at times) well out of the sweet spot. This doesnt correct generator consumption. I spoke to a gentleman running a 37' RV flat towing a Honda Passport with a 3126 CAT and he told me he got 7mpg if he did NOT use the gen driving for ac and stayed below 70

I'll take my 8.3 Cummins anyday, but that being said if the truck you find is a deal BUY it. If it isn't keep looking, it's a buyers market and these trucks are around with a cummins

Stay away from the MB engines, VERY expensive to maintain and repair!! Also not a lot of people know how to work on them, so you're pretty much stuck with the dealer.
 
I work on a fleet of trucks and 1 of them is a Workhorse with a Mercedes engine with 12k on it and has already had a engine with new injectors then about 2k later had to put another set of injectors in it. both sets leaked first set causing the bearings to was out, the second set we caught early enough to keep from messing up the engine

AWyatt, brian just bought a cummins pusher class a this spring. He pulled an 18 foot trailer with his rail and can am and seemed pretty pleased. Also, an old man from hillsdale bought an x-cab fl a few yeats back and had a flatbed built for it and tellss everyone its the best truck hes ever owned. It his dd. Get ahold of brian. He might have some input. Good luck
 
the 8.3 cummins with common rail started in '06. the previous 8.3's had the CAPS injection pump from 98-05, which is garbage from what i've seen.

Mine is a CAPS system and I would agree with you however it seems that a supply pump (such as a Fass system) cures the aliment they have... I have 70k with no issues... Or you could always do a P-pump conversion on it Pre-CAPS was a mechanical pump btw
 
I would ask to pull a pretty good size load with it before you bought it. Atleast you will know if it will pull and have enough power to be happy. When I was in the market to get a toter we drove a few and it seamed the the Fl60 was noisy and it felt like you had just metal around you the whole time squeaking. Come to find out some cabs are insulated better than others. I almost droped the handle on a peter built with the short nose. That thing rode great and was pretty quite considering the road we were on. As far as engine and gears I have no idea. It seems like everybody likes something different.
 
i find this thread quite interesting as ive been pondering a new tow rig and have been wandering whether to go with a "crew cab" type truck like this with a living quaters type trailer or a "toterhome" type truck and a regular enclosed trailer?

Thats exactly where we are at as well. I dont really want a Toter style because of length of the truck. But would be nice for the kids to run around in while hauling down the road. I had an LQ 42' aluminum trailer and it was just heavy even all Aluminum. I cant imagine the guys with Pace or Haulmarks and how much they are weighing. I dont see running LQ anything considering hotels are $59 or the likes a night. No reason to haul all that **** down the road IMO.
We've even talked about buying and 10 year old tractor and a 5 or so year old Cup Trailer, but the limiting factor is that upper deck. The tallest upper I've seen is a 57". How to get the saltcar up there, and its too short for my offroad car. But prices are certainly right these days on them. I've seen in person but not found one forsale where there wasnt an upper deck and the cars parked ontop of the cabinets and tied down on them (Pro2/Pro4 offroad trailer), and I've heard the Herbst brothers used to fit two trophy trucks into their 18 wheeler by winching the suspension all the way down which I dont like.

Gotta say the appeal of my '06 Dmax and my 32' featherlite enclosed running 80-90mph and able to get in and out of just about anywhere is super appealing to me right now. I dont really want to go big, but dad wants one of those trucks, so I might as well sell my trailer and buy a big sum bitch to put behind that truck.
