Trail Dog

Planning on trying to wheel alot this year with my 7 yr old son. Would like to get a dog to go with us. He has a small dog at home now, but thought about getting him a bigger dog for wheelin trips. Thanks guys for any input.

I've seen a few dogs on the trails and I'd say it could be a challenge but with the right dog and rig it could be done. Would take the right dog and some good training.

I'll only have one breed. Doberman pinscher is IMO the best breed. Protective, smart, loyal, and loving.

Might be a bit cliche but golden retrievers are always down for a good time. Great family dogs too.

My German Shepard rides with me. She sits up right during casual trailing. If I have to hit something hard just tell her to holds on and she hunkers down.Started her when she was 5 months old.

I only ask- please don't bring your kill anything that doesn't live in your house, kid hating, 'roid rage dog with you. I love dogs, but I love my kids having a face more. Believe it or not, some idiots will bring thier stupid (insert killer here) anywhere, including to the trails. Please, don't be that guy.

we're the same way, but rottweilers. on our 3rd one now. this one we started young with car rides and getting offroad a little. he travels really well

But what do you think about the guy that has his junk yard, kill everything dog in his Jeep, and when you walk by, it isn't just barking, but trying to bust out to ****ing KILL you? Who would want to wheel with that guy? I mean, Daisy barks at EVERYFAWKINTHING, but the only thing she'd ever kill is a good buzz and the occasional squirrel.

I should add, as a Libertarian, I believe you can have any dog you like. But when it comes to introducing your dog to the public (walking it, car shows, wheeling), you should take the proper precautions.

I was thinking maybe a good trained black lab. Forgot I had a buddy had one about 10 year ago that wheeled with him, ran along side his jeep about everywhere we went. Dat gum good dog it was.

Rhodesian ridgebacks and blue healers make really great trail dogs. Extremely smart, not known for being overweight and always need to be working/moving to be happy. Awesome family dogs as well

All these labs around the house here jumps in and lays in every mud hole around and then wants to jump in and ride, I like dogs on trips but not wet muddy ones might look at boxers or the American bull dog very short hair good luck man

I do get what your saying but it's no different than people letting their bratty little cum sprouts run rampant and get on the nerves of the lucky few of us that don't have kids. My dog is better behaved than most people's kids.

Agreed! Some kids need to be whooped! And some need to be left with mamaw while mom and dad go out. Same with mean ass dogs. Not the whooped dog part though. Mean dog can't help being an asshole. Lol

I have a half blue heeler half aulstrailian shepherd and this guy is amazingly smart. He doesn't pee or poop in the yard he goes to the woods. We leave the door open at the house and he will lay down at the door until someone tells him he can come in. I'm a type 1 diabetic and if my blood sugar drops or raises while I'm sleeping he licks my face and wakes me up if I don't wake up he goes and gets somebody. True story. He was never trained for any of this. And most of all when I hook to the boat or the trailer he lays by the truck door and won't move till I open it up to leave. He loves riding anywhere or anything. Even rides with my dad on the back of his honda goldwing before he sold it

Pretty much any dog that is well behaved and won't run away will make a decent trail dog.

I had a corgi that used to ride with me all the time.

I've taken harlan on a few rides w me. He's half German short haired and half Great Dane. He loves riding in the buggy. Everyone parked by me at rush loved watching jump up on the tire, walk across the hood and sit in my passenger seat. He will ride shot gun all day long happy as can be.
