Trail Dog

Be honest with you...My wife brought a (mut) home 2-years.....because she wanted an outside dog... He is a mix between who knows what. My experience with only muts...they are the best dogs ever.

He hears me grab the creeper in the shop and he is laying on my stomach hahaha...He sees me jump up in the Yota and he wants to ride and look out the window...and the best part is you can feed them about anything (scrap wise) and they don't get sick like full blooded dog..

Jack Russell's are a good small trail dog.

Seen several labs as trail dogs, I had a jack russel that I hauled with me for awhile he was just to enerjetic during down time or around camp. He was always into something.One morning at camp we were making coffee and getting ready to go out and we hear this loud commotion from the next camp I ran around the camper to see Milo with this huge white honey bun in his mouth peeing on the side of their tent!! Apparently one if the wives had made a little lean to rack to warm her honey bun by the fire, Milo snatched it, made a lap around their camp just so they knew he had it and on his way out he whizzed on their tent with his trophy held high!! That lady was pissed, I gave her $20 bucks for that damn honey bun. He was a trooper but needed constant attention. A buddy of mine was going through a really rough patch and had a lot going on and I felt he needed an outlet so he got Milo and has had him for 8 years now. I love a black mouthed cur and if I buy another dog (unlikely because I plan to adopt my next from the shelter they really are the best) it would be a brindle black mouth. I had a female that I had sight treeing her own squirrels at 4 mos she would ride in the boat with me or in my sammi. She was probly 25 to 28 lbs in my opinion she was an ideal trail dog, she was humble and stayed put unless called no matter what she was in. We were at a ride one Sunday and she jumps out of my rig and goes to one of my buddies nephews who was sitting off to the side of the obstacle crying, she stayed with that kid (9 at the time) all day and wouldn't pay me any attention. Turns out his dog had gotten ran over the previous Friday while he was getting off the bus and that was why he was still crying. Well long story short I don't have a trail dog these days. Lol damn my soft heart!!

If you want a dog that you can hook a tow strap to and get pulled out get an American bulldog. But if you want something to run beside the rig all day get something else. They're strong as an ox but tire out quickly. Also the older mine get the more protective he's become so unless you want to go by yourself they probably aren't the best trail dog.

This is Mylo, I don't know what the hell he is other than fuggin awesome! He used to be a pretty good trail dog, but he doesn't go anymore cuz his bad hip keeps from getting in and out of the jeep, but we ride behind the house occasionally.

Milo is also a good rafting dog.

Haven't put them in the jeep due to lack of room but they love riding in the Tracker.

My 10 year old Lab-Mastiff likes to ride, hike and hang out at camp. Loves people, kids and other dogs. Loyal to a fault and doesn't need to be leashed. Just got him a little brother. A 1 yr old Fox Hound-Aussie mix. Don't know how he'll do. He's pretty timid but he likes hanging in the garage with me so it's a good sign.

I used to take my American Bully on mild trail rides, he loved it, but he was just too big for the more hardcore wheeling. It threw him around in the jeep too much. I left him home after that.

I've got a 30lb rat terrier that loves to wheel. Doesn't wanna ride in the buggy till he gets tired. Gets all excited and jumpin around when I load the buggy on the trailer.

I have had Huskies, Malamutes, German Shepherds, and Chocolate Labs. My brother had a Black Lab, I have trained and worked two of the breeds I listed for SAR purposes.

I'm a fan of whatever works for your family but knowing that if you take it out its your responsibility and liability. Train it, make sure it's vaccinated, collared, leashed, and tagged.

I'm a fan of large breeds obviously those can scare smaller children and childish adults. Let your son pick if out if its his dog and train it with him.

Ollie the wheelin pig is an awsome trail dog! He loves it

Im not sure he would make a good trail dog cause he is fat and lazy now, but in his younger days my American Bulldog would ride on the fourwheeler with me. We would ride all the cotton fields til dark then go to the house. He would probably be fine on a rig as long as he could lay down and sleep!!! Either an American Bulldog or a Boston Terrier would be my pic, both are awesome dogs and are pretty much happy wherever they are.
