Buggy Rebuild

AdamF said:
I remember that buggy from somewhere, thought it may have been haspin. maybe I'll run into you there this summer.

Same thing I thought the first time I saw it.

It was built by a guy in Evansville Indiana. He has taken it all over. Im not sure if he ever went to haspin tho. He went to interlake all the time. The buggy does great. I love it. I just had to make it my own.

The buggy is alive once again.

The wiring is a mess right now. I will clean it up and get it all protected before im done. The motor seems to run pretty good. I have noticed that its kinda hard to start up. I guess the cam is known for low vacuum and i need good vacuum for the propane to open up. Ill need to play with it more to get it dialed in. The video is just after it got up to temp.

I put the distributor in at 11 to account for the clockwise spin of the gears. I made sure the dis was just before firing the 1st cylinder before stabbing it in. I took a picture of the dis before i took it out to show about how far it was advanced. When i was ready to start the motor i put the dis about back to where it was. The cam i chose (e303) is very basic and just bigger then stock so i set it all back to how it was. Everything worked out just fine.

If anyone hears anything in the video please let me know as i am no expert. Hell im not even good at this yet so any info is more then helpful.

The interior is going back together.

The drivers seat is mounted. The camlock and side straps are mounted.

Front axle is in place. Shocks are mounted but not filled.

Gonna try my best to have it all back together tonight. I am taking it to have the shocks filled tomorrow.

I got the bang shifter located and my holes drilled. Paint is drying now and it will be on the buggy soon.

All packed up and off to get the shocks filled and motor tuned a bit.

Its no TC 1000HP monster but its got more power then i can control at this point. Im happy with the turn out.

Thank you. Im ready to take it out and beat on it a bit. I still have to put the winch, grill, lights, and top on it but its ready to ride.

The brakes need work so i hit the hill in 2nd low and stayed there. i could have went to 3rd or even 4th. The buggy is running great just gotta fix a few small little problems. The biggest issue is the power steering. I cant seem to get it working right for the life of me.

I had to grind a small chunk out of a bracket to get the distributor to adjust enough. Well now i think i finally have the timing dialed in. It is starting just fine and has a nice idle with the cam.

I picked up a longer bolt and ground it to fit as a new push rod for the master cylinder. It did the trick! Now i hope it just holds up to the pressure. Somehow i bent one of the push rods that came on it. I went through the system and did a complete bleed. The brakes are now working great. All i need to do now is figure out the damn power steering problems.

I am new to buggies and even new to offroading so for me i need simple. If i went out and bought a bouncer i would not learn as much as fast. This buggy is by far more then enough for what i do on the normal wheeling trip. Anything more then this and its just a waste of money (IMO). Normally i am like you i guess. I just bought a new motorcycle. I sold my 08 1000rr to get a 2015 bmw S1000RR loaded. I find it hard on where to draw the line on most things but as for offroading goes my rig is already past the line. Im sure i will have a bouncer one day but thats not today.

I really want to hold out until i can fully build my own single seater bouncer. Still have tools to buy and lots to learn before i can do that.

The shifter is much better the the stock long arm shifter from the np435. It has a much shorter throw, and is more precise. I just mounted it to the decking that was already built so its not 100% stable just yet. It will flex a bit still yet. Ill need to fab up some kind of brace. The new shifter makes the buggy so much more fun. It just gives you a more comfortable ride.

Im not sure if the tranny was tight or not. This is the only np435 i have ever driven. I would think it was lose if anything.

I found out that the rear brakes are missing a few small components. The self adjusters for the e-brake cables are not there. The e-brake is kinda of working right now. Im hoping i can get them to fully engage tonight when i add the missing parts. I will also have to shorten the cables an inch or so to get room for future adjustment. Gonna take these dorman cable stops and use them to shorten the cables up. I saw another thread somewhere that did this with good luck.

The cable stops really helped me get the e-brakes to work well. I also got all the small cables and brackets on in the right spots. I can lock the tires on any hill now. So im more then happy with the brakes. The brakes are 3x better then when i bought the buggy.

Power steering is not bad now. I do have all the air out of the system but i think the pump i put in might be on its last leg due to me running it to much with lots of air in the system. I have a warranty on it so i will go ahead and replace it.

Might have a bit of air in the collant system. It did get a bit hot at times. I will have to burp the coolant system before i go back out.

now time for some action. The 1st video is a big hill at the local park. This was my 1st big hill climb on the new setup so its not the smoothest action but it worked. I was the only one to make it. I had to take off in low 3 and once over the hump i went down to 2nd and just stayed on the gas.
