40 spline? Whats the story?

So i am upgrading the new front end to a jana 76 with thrust block and 40 spline. I went to WOD asking about RCV shafts where I was educated about the fact that if you run standard 60 knuckles then the rcv stuff always necks to 35. I was then reffered to some guys that make 40 spline stuff who then educated me that I needed new spindles and some hub machining. I am committed to doing what it takes to make everything right. My question is this...

What is involved in machining the hubs, and are there any stock application spindles I might be able to get from the salvage yard that would accommodate 40 spline stuff?

Very much true. The broaching at the 60 sized CV joint is 35 spline from what I know and have seen.

For spindles you will need custom spindles as well as custom machined hubs. This is the exact outer stuff that's on my buggy with 40 spline shafts and Rockwell CVs.

Are you trying to get away from breaking the ujoints or twisting shafts or both?

Adam can hook you up with everything you need to do this RIGHT and not with junk. He can set you up with heat treated chromoly spindles, machine the hubs for the bearings needed to run 40 spline, supply the bearings and get your drive flanges lined out a couple different ways.

I am trying to get away from breaking shafts. I have not had a problem with super joints yet. I guess if super joints become the weak link I will have to build some hybrid axle with rock outers. I am not always very hard on my stuff just sometimes. I think ctms are probably stronger than my 70 ring and pinion..

Do you have adams number? WOD had me call branik motorsports...

Adam (woodlee) = WOD

I think bj was saying that WOD can get you all the outer spindle/hub parts to work with 40 spline stuff.

Branik has the shafts you need (40 spline Foote axles) (and they can probably sell you the spindle parts you need too)

Sounds to me like a set of 300M RCV 35 spline shafts would probably do the trick. Mine have been pounded on for around 5 years now and are still holding up fine.

I really think you would be better off starting from scratch and doin a 14 bolt. Dana 70 pinion is still same diameter as a 60.

I broke 2 Jana 76 kits and I only have 39s and a baby motor

That's still mind blowing. I've had the same low pinion 60 for 5 years and never broke it. I even had 42" irok stickies full of water for a year before I went to Krawlers. I broke a knuckle, ripped out a steering arm, killed a Detroit and a couple shafts before the RCVs went in but never a gear set.

I 100% agree. Retube a 14 bolt with good outers if you want to spend the coin and have the best axle for the investment.

And if you're dead set on 40 spline, and on a "budget", check out 05+ Super duty outers. They can fit 40 spline shafts without modification.

I think your probably right! At this point I want to get my buggy done and if it wont hold up i really wont have much into it. I think its going to run me a total of 300 extra to do it this way and then I can use this axle under my jk or something more mild. I have been beating on the same lp with 40 in stickies for three years and havent broken a ring and pinion yet but I have never had a 383 like this either. And it will allow me to run till I get something heavier built.

Isnt it usually the ring gear that lets go and not the pinion?

I've got a L/P 60 in my buggy broke ring gear first trip out. The second trip out twisted the pinion shaft in half. It is at EOR right now having a 14 bolt put in it. Just my 2 cents save your money and go 14 bolt.
