Sold/Expired Need a NP 231 to replace the 242 from my 96ZJ

Need some help folks. I busted the case on my 242 and want to replace it with a 231. I'm not worried about the input as to I will swap it out with the one in the 242. What I can't seem to get a clear answer on is the long or short shaft and will the 231 mate up with the 242 bolt pattern?
