Integral is always better if you can fit it. It means that the intake port of the pump is always submerged in a pool of sitting fluid. So even during periods of restricted intake they have a reservoir of intake at their disposal. PS pumps are not designed to get all of their fluid from the intake alone. They require some amount of bypassed fluid from the outlet to come back to the intake side not to starve. So by using an external reservoir you are taking away this reservoir of fluid and forcing the pump to suck in fluid exclusively through a flexible hose instead. The longer the hose, the more likely it is to get sucked closed and the more friction there is fighting the intake. In addition, when you increase the pump output you decrease the recirculation / bypass back to input. So now you are demanding even more from the supply line coming from the remote res. That's why you see this knee-jerk reaction by all aftermarket companies to max out the supply line size with -10, and -12 an fittings. If you look at industrial hydraulic pumps designed for remote res. though you will notice that -10 would be very small for the intake side with -12 and -16 being very common among pumps that have roughly equal displacement as Saginaw pumps. Some abandon fittings altogether and use flanges with gaskets to give them the ability to have a huge bored hole for the intake side without the wall thickness of a fitting restricting it.
