Here is a email I got thru my club. To: Sheriff (YSO) Subject: Jeep Doors FYI, for patrol doing traffic. With the amount of fatal accidents involving Jeeps recently, I’ve been making more stops to contact Jeeps and other vehicles that are running without doors. A couple of people asked me about the RCW for that violation. The new bail schedule has it listed under Safety Equipment, Protruding Body. The RCW is 46.37.517, Infraction, Penalty $101. I’ve been doing verbal or written warnings for most of my contacts. If the vehicle came with doors, they must be maintained in working condition equal to that at the time of original vehicle manufacture. The “nerf†bars, half vinyl doors, plywood doors and other replacements do not meet the requirement for operations on the highway. (RCW, WAC and Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards) The seat belt is not designed to retain occupants inside the vehicle if the vehicle rolls side to side without the doors in place. Most of our injuries are from the occupants getting outside the passenger compartment and into the roof or roll bar area, resulting in serious head and neck injuries. All Toyota’s, Pickup trucks and most other SUV’s should have the doors. Some Willey’s, early CJ’s (MB35, M151, CJ2, all CJ3’s) and military vehicles were made so that doors were not required. I have contacted several vehicles and had the occupants tell me that they contacted a deputy and were told they could run without doors. They can in fact run without doors on State Green Dot and Forest Service Jeep trails. They cannot run on the public highways. Thanks for the help, Deputy Lowry, #87
