Decided to save some cash and make my own short comp. winch.
Took some pics along the way.
Here goes.
Started with a new Smittybuilt XRC 10

Disassembled and cut the drum

Turned one side down half the thickness of the drum and 1 3/4" long, bored the other side out and left a .003" press fit

Welded it up and turned it back smooth

Had it powder coated and then reassembled

Took about 4 -5 hrs., saved 1000.00, thumb.gif

Awesome job! That's good, clean work right there. How much line can you get on that thing?

I shortened the drum to the same size as the Warn 9.0 Rc drum so it should hold 50' of line.
This will primarily be a suck down winch.
If you think about it most pulls are very short.
I have a 3/4" x 25' synthetic winch extension if I need it.

That's the best mod I've seen in a while. :dblthumb: will really help out on future builds what was the over all with?

Was there just a hex shaft for the drive? I cut down a m8000 basically the same deal but instead of all the lathe work just cut the weld on the motor side end plate and welded it back on the same width as yours then cut the excess off!

I have alot of pics on the grand but didn't really do a build thread on it.
Somewhiteguy,, was holding out for a Warn comp winch and your winch build was what made me want to cut one down.
There is a hex shaft inside but the splined drive on one end is what drives the drum.
It shrunk from 21.200" down to 16.880", I took 4.315" out of the drum, aluminum spacer rods and the center hex.
