Depends on what kinda grass you have really, but let me break down the basics: Pre-Emergent control keeps weed seeds from germinating Post Emergents kill the weeds you got now There are basically two delivery methods for each, granular and liquid. Post emergent granulars are not as effective because the granular must stick to the weed and timing with rain is critical. The liquids are going to be broken down into selective and non-selective herbicides. Non selectives (roundup for example) kill everything withour mercy. There are different types of non-selectives that kill some weeds and if you follow the label and know what kind of grass you have they shouldn't harm your lawn. Some stuff is hard as **** to get rid of and you wont have a chance with homestore quality non-selective herbicides (ie crab grass, poa-annua) Pre-Emergents is the way to go but you need to follow a scedule as reccomended by the label and dont get lazy. You'll still get a few weeds here and there but you can spot spray to control them. Best bang for your buck and easy to obtain is Lesco PRE-M that you can buy at most home depots. For easy application of selective post-emergent herbicides for the average joe, ortho weed-be-gone max in the bottle that hooks up to your garden hose is a good 1st step to kill the weeds you have now. Also, most weeds in the South are very seasonal. THe weeds you have now will die out once it heats back up but a whole other army of weed seeds are down there waiting to germinate when it warms back up.
