Yep, you have to start with a stock 205 to get the bearing retainers, shift rails, shift forks, etc. A rebuild kit for new bearings, as mentioned. And you have to buy or fab twin sticks if you want them. Then you'll probably need upgraded outputs. By that time you are close to an Atlas in cost.

You can insert Hero case, Stak, or whatever in place of Atlas. The point is that he's in for an expensive repair because there are no replacement parts for the LoMax.

I had a LoMax in my previous rig with a Vortec 350, SM465, and 42" tires. The rig worked great with that combination. I went with an Atlas in my current buggy due to availability. One of my wheeling buddies has a LoMax in his buggy with a healthy 6.0, TH350, and 43s. It was a great set-up...

One of my wheeling buddies ran the 42/17 SX2s on his buggy for a couple of years. I was not impressed with them at all. They seemed like a harder rubber that didn't crawl well. He cut the sidewalls on three of them I think. He has recently switched to 43" SX stickies.

Not a CJ, but same concept. A four seater Jim's Garage built several years ago.
