MY DODGE 5.9 VS. 6.7 please?

towing a 5th wheel thats about 16.5k loaded. when towing the power is nice i can pull vantage at 80 mph 6th gear no problems with my 5th wheel.

might want to try reading that one again Jay.. 16.5K plus the weight of his truck.. do the math.

with a 30 hp over stock setting? Next time you're going up Vantage, take a video camera. If you can keep 80 at 24k+ up vantage I'll give you 50 bucks. I have towed over 24k with a Common rail Dodge WITH a smarty up vantage. I know what speed I was able to hold.. And that was even at 1350 degrees. And before you say the Smarty added heat with the more powerful programming. It actually lessoned the heat. It was worse bone stock. You can save this post just to make sure I remember.

I love how you turn everything into a pissing match, and competition.

And you turn around and bitch at me? Beautiful :haha:.

Yes I don't mind calling BS on someone. I hope you whine about everyone on here that does the same.

The person who started the thread was looking for ACCURATE information for a truck purchase. Most on here understood that.

Now if you're done we'll get this back on track. Either one he gets I know he will be very happy with.

And I'd better see it when you have a new truck buddy! :awesomework:

Keep in mind that mileage differs greatly between 2 wheel drive and four wheel drive, Mine's a 4x4 and gets 8 mpg towing 26k, 11-13 mpg around town, and 14-16 mpg hwy
These numbers are pretty accurate compared to my buddys with the same setup(6.7).

alright, i'd go with the 6.7 with a new truck just because they will work out the problems in no time, and it's a better motor..
Hey Jeffro, wheres the facts to back up the 6.7 being a better motor? Its hard to say any motor from the big 3 is better than the 5.9 as its track record speaks for itself. Either way its a Cummins, and that says it all.

My 06 is pretty quiet, I don't think the latter 07's or 08's are any quieter, when it comes to compression nock...........but I will be strait piping mine this week end :awesomework:
I have the same truck as you, my business partner has the 6.7 and it is definately quieter no dought. Now with you straight piping it that all goes out the door.:;

For most people, including Sean, the benefits wouldn't be noticed in having a 6.7. But the motor itself is built better to withstand the higher temps associated All of the emissions junk. And I'd be willing to bet you will see the size playing a big part in making more hp then the 5.9 ever did. But like I said, this wouldn't be noticed for the average person because you'd have to ditch all of the emission stuff which no one has come up with programming for. And plenty of mods on top of that. So yea I'd say for me, I'd take the 6.7. But for Sean it's a little more difficult. the 5.9 would be an awesome truck and he'd pretty much not have to worry about a thing. But the 6.7 is easier to get your hands on at the moment.

H&S sells both a standalone exhaust as well as a programmer + exhaust that strait pipes a 6.7L. BADP also sells a turbo back exhaust for the 6.7L.

There

I don't like to do "bandaid" fixes. And covering up codes and leaving all of the EGR stuff on the side of the motor just bugs me.

After doing the DPF deletes you can take off the ERG, that's no big deal.

Even if you still have the stock exhaust you can unplug the ERG simply enough. The hardware is still there, it just can't get the signal to turn on. I ran a few tanks that way, didn't notice any mileage changes, but my engine ran noticeably cooler. :awesomework:

I don

It's still just a block off plate though correct? And it throws codes because it is just a fooler in front of the ECM... I know it will happen, someone will figure it out. It's just a lot more difficult then Cummins engines of the past.

Of course if you're in an emissions area.. screw doin any of it.. lol..

Wow there is alot of info here. Jeff was right though I will tow average or less loads. I like the idea of having the option to be able to tow big loads down the road later. We might be getting a big toy hauler later(depending on the economy obviously) but until then it will be on light duty. I do plan on a lift and controller at least. I will never take it to the level of my first diesel(twin turbo 12v) and this time I want the auto tranny. I might have found the truck. it is a 5.9 06 4x4 megacab laramie loaded with everything except the sunroof. we will see. I joined up over at cummins board and am seeing alot of opinions about this topic. What I am seeing is if I find the 5.9 then I only have to do an air intake, controller, and maybe exhaust. If I do a 6.7 then I will need to do all that pluss eliminate some emissions stuff that was installed prematurely by the factory? Does this sound accurate? Im not sure which I will end up with but I am confident I will enjoy either one. thanks for all the input guys.:awesomework:

Get a 5.9...............stay away from the the DPF. Real 5.9's come with p pumps so it looks as if you should have kept the old smokey girl. I personally feel the 5.9 is tried and true and the 6.7 has not been around long enough to know its full capabilities and longivity. The 5.9 circulates water between the cylinders where the 6.7 does not. That in itself is why I would stay with my inferior little 5.9. Plus I have never seen any of the newer trucks pull milage like the old 12 valves.:redneck:

that will be a sweet truck! Lift, wheels/tires, intake/exhaust and a SMARTY! You will not regret it. Porter gets 24 mpg with his running the smarty and my Dad gets 21.5 with his 4x4 dually running the smarty. And they offer plenty of extra power if you ever want to play :awesomework:

I also did the 08 MegaCab, 6.7L 6sp Auto 20K miles. With 35" Toyo M/T's, 3" leveling kit, and big winch bumper I am getting 15-16city/19-21HWY. I have the Bullydog PMT, and BADP Gen II kit that still throws codes. Getting fed up with the constant CEL on, so thinking about turning it back stock. Which was 13City/17HWY. Love the truck though. The new 6sp auto kicks ass with the EB.

i have a 5" turbo back and a afe cold air intake but i havent put it on yet because i dont know where there are any mod friendly dealers.

Just a FYI the Dodge dealer in Kirkland on 24th seems pretty mod friendly. I talked to the Service manager about bringing my truck in for service and he said that they don't "Look" for mods. I said that I have a pillar mounted programer, he said don't worry, but if I need any engine warrenty work to remove it cause they dodge rep might come to inspect the failed part if it is a serious claim, and the rep wouldn't like to see the programmer.

I also talked to the Dodge of Bellevue and they are NOT mod friendly at all. They tried to void my Jeep warrenty cause I have the Mopar lift. And said that if I brought my truck in with a programmer it would void it for sure.

BADP Gen II kit that still throws codes

JBUCK take that stuff off and use the pyro probe that comes with your pmt, preturbo. then pm me and I will tell you how to make your own foolers for the egt probes. I had a lot of problems with my badp stuff to. also you can block off your egr .
