Fords PSD vs Dodes Cummins..

Go price out powerstroke injectors vs Cummins injectors :redneck:. PS injectors are at least double the price. Single turbos are close (aftermarket). But twins, the powerstroke is double. programmers are all pretty similar though.

Just go to any local dyno event, compare the two. Dodges almost always take top honors, with exception to some chevy's every now and then. Fords usually aren't even close. It's not just because of issues, it costs a lot of money to get the 6.0's and 7.3's up there. The 6.4 would hand me my ass with just a HOT tune, even when I get my truck back on the road with the goals I have. Also notice the vehicles all of the mechanics and shop owners are driving :awesomework:.

But my point is you have to mod the cummins to get any power out of them...

If you have a better motor than me I'm fine with that. I'm not one to keep up with the Jones's.
BTW do you even have a motor that runs?

yea, and it's an inline 6 :fawkdancesmiley:. I've already stated why I tore my engine apart. It ran fine when I backed it into the garage. I just got bored with the power it was making, and decided to start fresh. My head now has new, larger valve springs, valve job to fix the last one with a few more tweaks, better pressed on hats, o-ringed, exhaust ports opened up. Custom cam with bolt on gear is done. Pump is turned up as much as possible without having to drop in a custom cam or swap plungers and barrels. Next is the short block, already talked to the builder about what is going to happen with it.

What do you base this on? I don't agree and I would say either could be built "stronger" than the other. Are you meaning to say a given Cummins inline 6 is "stronger" than a given PS V8? I would agree the Cummins block/ crank/ rods can withstand more torque than the PS V8 parts.:;

Larger lower end, more bearing area, etc. bigger = stronger, I read up on it somewhere long ago and it made sense, but I don't remember where, I also think they were discussing why the big rigs had large inline 6 vs a V8. I am sure at the small engine level of the tow rigs we have, either one is strong enough.

How long has it been since you've been in a stock Ford? If you think it has power, your expectations are extremely low. But like I said, any of the newer diesels, doesn't matter which you jump in. They all do pretty decent stock, and have great power potential with just a programmer.

That quote was intended to push your buttons :flipoff:but hey, it sounds like a fun project.:cool:

The whole suped up modified power trucks thing I'm sure is fun. The Cummins has readily available aftermarket parts to get higher power numbers out of it so if that's your thing then this would be a benefit to the Cummins.:cool:

Here's some food for thought, a comparison between the two.......
Two engines with the same power output. One is smaller than the other- cubic inches. The smaller engine has a higher compression ratio and more turbo boost which is harder on components so they must be beefier. The larger engine can have a lower compression ratio and less boost to make the same power so the components don't need to be as beefy. Now take into account that the smaller engine also has 3/4 as many cylinders so each cylinder must make up the difference which requires it to be even beefier. The smaller engine is designed to run at a lower RPM range so in order to make the same power it has to make even more torque to get the same power. More torque= components must be even beefier to hold up.
What's this all add up to? Many have pointed out in the past that the Cummins has a beefier bottom end which it does. Above are a few reasons why.
It's just two slightly different approaches to get the same end result being the same power output. Doesn't make either one right or wrong.:;

Wow some descent points being given here but here is my take on the 2 having owned both.

CTD, makes more power down low where you want it for towing.
Its nothing new that the inline motor has a longer life span than a V-8 design, that being said can you think of any inline motor in history that didnt outlast a V-8 almost, but in most cases 2 to 1. There is a reason the heavy hauling semi's run the inline design over the V-8.
Easier to work on.
In most cases gets better fuel mileage.

PSD, costs more to make power equilivent to the CTD. Makes power up higher in the RPM range which is harder on the motor in the long run, and not very optimum for towing when it gets slower on the windy hills. Now I say harder to work on meaning the engine compartment is a whole lot more cluttered. Now I am not saying the PSD is not a good product, but IMO because the CTD makes power down lower it makes it a better choice for a tow rig. But to each their own, run what you like:;. There is my been there done that opinion. Having owned both motors and also working on them/seeing what comes in more for service owning an automotive repair shop. Now I will let you chest thumpers get back to spending quality time with each other. Outta here.:;:D

Since when did you work at a diesel shop :fawkdancesmiley:

What is the wastegate set at anyways on a stock Ford? I thought it was similar to the Dodge's 19 psi.
Not at a diesel-specific shop...but we do work on 'em... I have no idea what they pop at stock!!:haha: (I work on soooo many different vehicles I can't possibly keep everything in my head!!:redneck:)
