Truck was started after a tune up and made really ugly noises, apparently something dropped into the plug hole when the old one was removed. Knew I'd find something good when the push rods were nicely bow shaped but I really didn't expect to find half a piston lodged solidly into the head.

Took a little hike this morning. On the North Slope where it is the steepest there was about 6-8" of snow. Got way off of the trail on the way down looking for any shed antlers, but didn't find anything...

We did. These engines are known for blowing the #7 piston apart but with the piston in that condition there's now way to prove something didn't drop into the cylinder when the old plug was removed. The rear 4 cylinders on these things are pretty buried back under the cowl so the tech that did the tune up could have easily not seen a rock/screw/small bolt laying alongside the plug. It would also be mighty odd for it to happen to have that detonation issue on start up when the truck drove in.

The rod is bent into the cylinder wall like it hit something, poked a hole in the head then tried to hydrolock and broke the piston roughly in half.

Finished the engine swap this morning, first time I've driven an 8.0 and I gotta say, I don't know how they sold a single one when you could get the same rig with a 12v.
