scrap prices

Does anybody know what scrap metal is going for? I have a chance to get some and was wondering if it would be worth my time.:awesomework:

Most of the stuff is really thick weighing 550pounds a foot.

I cleaned my garage a couple weeks ago and dumped 540 lbs of scrap at the recyclers in Pacific. I got about $34.00.

I was told by one person its going for $.57 a lb. Does that sound right? It seems pretty high to me.

Last time I took steel in I got .08cents a pound that was about a month ago. That's in small town Wenatchee though I am sure it's higher for you guys on the coast.

8-10 cents a pound is about right. 10 if its heavy clean.

If its as heavy as you say, its probably worth more as SALVAGE than SCRAP.

What form of iron is it? clean/straight or damaged?

There large I beams. Some of them are 3" thick. They are all cut down to pieces that weight between 5000 to 10000 pounds.

Size of the longest, smallest ones? I need a pair of new rails for an old sawmill carriage. Anything smaller? Like 1 foot channel/I beam?

There's a few but there only 2' maybe 3' long.

I grab 20 or so small pieces that were cut out so we could pick these things up.Who's paying the most for scrap in the south end? I know there's a place in Ghorst, a couple in Tacoma, one in Algona and one in Kent.

Clean heavy ibeams 5 foot or less would be about 240 per ton.

If you call calbag in Tacoma, and its a decent volume of good clean iron, they will negotiate with you on price. You need to speak to one of their buyers directly tho in the office, and not one of the outside guys. I like Calbag because they run a pretty clean ship considering the business. Nice paved parking and drop off areas, unlike that nasty old Schnitzer down the road with their big mud pits and nails in your tires.

Most of the smaller side of the road guys just load up and haul to Calbag or schnitzer, so drive the extra mile and get the better rate. Anything above 10 cents for steel is good right now.

Anyone know who has good prices for scrap aluminum right now? I have a bunch of intake manifolds, a/c cores, aluminum pipe, etc...

I unloaded a red brass and cooper nickel heat exchanger about 6 months ago.

We got HOSED on it. They gave us about $1/lb When I got home I looked up scrap prices online.

We should have got $3/lb. You can haggle with those guys. If you aren't getting what you want (within reason) load it back up and take it home. :awesomework:

online scrap prices tend to be industrial/bulk quotes. You get less for smaller quantities. And again, the smaller scrap outfits are going to give you a lot less than if you drove all the way down to the tideflats and deal with the shredder yard personally.

I recycled almost 400lbs of aluminum siding at a local scrapper and he was giving about 80% of what the tideflats were giving. I really didnt want to drive down to tacoma that day, so I took the money. Wasnt worth the 20 bucks to drive all the way.

Best bet is to call around to different scrap yards the day you are looking to haul stuff in. They will always give you a low price on the phone if you are some random person calling. If you have 20 trailer loads, you can get a higher price then a trunkload. Calbag is not always the best price around.
