ar15 vs ar10

getting a custom build in trade for some work. ive allways preferd the bigger ar10 and downrange balistics to the lighter 223's
the problem is im not well versed in the ar platforms

so, im open to sugestions . 90% chance ill go ahead with having it done as a .308 , thinking flat top heavy barrel dont know what else i should request.

perfect timing for good advice as i literally just sold a saiga ak and want to replace it with a 308 or 300 blackout ar. just not 100 percent sure which yet.

The only real advantage an AR10 has over the AR15 is ballistics.

The downsides to an AR10:
1. Ammo will typically cost more
2. They are significantly heavier
3. They have a significant amount of recoil
4. Less magazine capacity
5. Less parts available
6. Not all parts/magazines are interchangeable

I was out shooting both AR15's and an LMT .308 AR yesterday. Recoil sucks on the 308 if you're used to an AR15 which also makes follow up shots more time consuming.

I can't decide myself if I want another competition AR or a 300 blackout but I'm thinking the 300 blackout would just be a waist. It's cool but not something I would shoot a bunch. My dad is trying to talk me into a 6m (not the 6.8), but with so many different kinds out there it's hard. It would be nice if someone who had some real experience would speek up, ( pro 3 gun shooters, pro bench shooters, distance shooters) because It's hard to tell who talking just to talk or has real hand experience.

when you say custom build, what do you mean?

i am new to ar's but am slowly learning.

if you have a few other rifles that are bigger calibers go with the .223, if all you have is smaller calibers go with the .308. if you have no rifles at all i would get a .223 first and get the .308 later.

my roomate has a pretty big variety and he loves his 6.8.

re: recoil.... im used to shooting 540gr hardcast 45-70 out of a 7lb guide gun. so 308 in comparison its like going from a 12ga to a 22..

re: custom build, the guy builds ar's to your spec, useing what you request, and giving his personal feedback/sugestions..

45-70 is big but is it a semi auto? Might want to look at some other forms, like sniper hide, 3 gun forms and others.

I have a Armalite ar10 super s.a.s.s.. I love it! I haven't had mine long only about 8 months I have only shot about 80 rounds.

Easy, get both!

Ups and downs to every gun, depends on hat you want it for and how often you plan to run it.

Whatever you choose to get be sure to spec out a good trigger and barrel (Geissele trigger and white oak/Noveske/rock creek/Lilja/krieger/benchmark barrels), the rest can be whatever flavor you want. If you are spending the time and or money on building a custom AR make it accurate.

Compromise caliber would be 6.5 Grendel, which is an AWESOME caliber. Still supersonic at 1200 meters, energy down range is closer to .308 than .223.

AND you get to keep a small frame AR which means you get to use all the regular AR15 add on goodies.

no, lever action.. but close to 4000ft/lb energy out of a 7lb rifle gives you an idea of the kick im used to... thats what i was conveying.
and all things being equal, a semi auto has les percived recoil than say a bolt action given same ammo and gun weight.

I have an armalite ar10 a4 16" light barrel, plastic handguard. Its over a pound less than my 22" 4 rail dpms. Depends on the parts, for the weight. Recoil is light, unless you're a ***** :flipoff:

I would get a threaded barrel for muzzle devices. My armalite has a heavier buffer spring, and a battlcomp on it, it doesnt have much recoil. I would recommend a AR10 receiver that takes Pmags. My armalite takes the proprietary magazine that is 50$ for a 20 rounder. Besides that. Flat top, low pro gas block, preffered stock/grip. Everything is very personal. I have just added the battlcomp, buffer spring, and troy battlsights on my gun. Also a viking recoil pad. It runs wet, dry, dirty, and cold. I like it.

My comment on recoil was taken out of perspective.

Yes, shooting your 4" mortar form the nutsack gives the awesome feeling of being alive, but in a semi-auto gas gun recoil means less rounds on target, nothing more.

What do you want to do with it? Target, comp, hunting, defense.... That should drive your choice.

Your right, recoil has nothing to do with follow up shots and/or the time it takes to get the rifle back on target and everyone with an AR is just a spray & pray mall ninja.

I can't tell if you're serious or you're joking, recoil has a lot to do with it. It's starting sound like the AR platform is not the way to go, if he's getting a custom build and he's only looking to fire one shot maybe he should get into precision shooting. I love the AR platform due to the fact you can shoot multiple rounds at a target without dealing with a lot of recoil. I just got into three gun shooting and love, I use 556 and I used anything bigger it would be hard to compete. You are right about the idiots rapid shooting pop cans at 25m but you get those guys everywhere and they are funny to watch.
