So i bought a 51 Whilly

I'll see what I can find in the way of pics, but the only one I remember seeing out of our batch is the one of me, Bill, Ken, and that ex-Seal guy (who swam the whole way on the last trip) dumping those obnoxious teenagers.:haha: :haha: I was just telling someone that story this weekend. I can still hear the cries - Oh my keys! Shoes! All our stuff! Then peace and quiet.

So today it was actually my birthday, so i stripped in the front yard.

Took a few hours but came out really clean. These panels are 5086, .125" thick, aluminium. They had some insulation studs glued on one side and painted on the other. Some paint stripper and a garden hose later.

Bare naked panels.

Im calling it a day and drinking the rest of the afternoon away.

I knew it was today, but if I didn't post yesterday, how would everyone know to give you crap today.

Those are some sweet naked sheets there.

Hope your drinking goes well, I'm just about at that point myself - still working on the Zuk smog thing. Latest update is that all the ref stations are closed due to budget issues and DMV says no more temps... Makes me want to :puke:

On another note, if I send you fiddy bucks, will you go buy some matching paint for that rig? You keep adding colors like this, and it's gonna be :rb:

Happy Birthday.

Actually went and bought some paint the other day. Im gonna go over everything once the fabrication is completed. The tranny will be exposed so I got some discs for my sander and some gloss black. The engine will remain orange. everything else will be two or three different colors of green and tan. You just saw the light green. Havent decided on the tan yet.

yeah now that the crack heads can see they are aluminium they would not last long. they are now safely inside.

Ya gonna come by friday and weld some more?

Good idea:awesomework:

Yep i will be by around the same time if not a little earlier:cool:

Thanks for stopping by.

Well today we both learned something new. It takes a really long time to heat a dana 60 center section up to 500 deg F, at least using a 50,000 btu kerosene jet heater:redneck: Took about 4 hours till the temp stick would melt. Then we went at it, 2" bead, beat the piss out of the face of the weld, move to the other side, repeat till done. I repaired a broken needle gun just for this task but it was too strong so we had to beat it by hand.

I dought it will come apart. been a long time since the ol stick welder was needed.

7018 rod.

I can never remember. Does heating up the metal soften it? Or is that just steel not cast? Or does it depend on if it was previously treated?
Looks sweet! :awesomework:
I have never seen someone go to the trouble of doing it correctly.
Where did you get the temp sticks?

if you dont pre heat there will be no penetration into the nodular iron of the center section. the beating the face of the weld brings all the little cracks to the surface....or so im told. My old stick welder was having a hard time starting the arc. might need a good cleanning.

i get to do it again on the front for the upper DS linc bracket. The PS will land on the tube.

i got the temp sticks from work. expensive little devils i will return them when the front end is complete.

i didnt do anything yesterday i didnt even open the shop.:looser:

you can preheat and do whatever you want. But unless you use the correct rod to bond with nod Iron your weld is going to fail. same results as wirefeed with hardwire. get some rod or wire with nickle in it and go over those welds.

so like some ni-99 or n-55?

if i do i cover pass do i need to heat it again?

the research i did was 50 /50 between pre heat and 7018 rod to spread out the surface area

or n-55 rod with less preheat like 300 vice 500.

i am not against covering it with a high nickel rod so i guess i just need to know pre heat for the cover or not? if so how much?.

ni-99 is the best way to go:awesomework:

try and grind out your 7018 as much as possible and pre heat it too 300

Woops:mad: , guess we get to do this agin hip:redneck:

yeah let me find the right rod first. then ill grind and get it ready again. my rework is always my best.....

Hahaha. Fortunently i got the chance to burn some NI rod in school so i know what we are dealing with.

Have you also searched the net a little more to make sure NI rod is the way to go?

thats actually the way i wanted to do it but i got convinced by a weld engineer that the 7018 with 500 deg preheat would be adequate. i do not want it to fail. ill go with the nickel rod this time and forget about it after that.
