Shorts?

With your brakes working, Check to see that the 4ways (when on), and the brake lights (when applying the pedal) are on the same bulb (if you will) out back....Is so then.....
Next time try your 4 ways when you know your brake lights aren't working...If they (4ways) DO work out back, that will eliminate the wiring in the back as culprit (brake lights no worky but the 4ways DO worky says the circuits out back are good!)...look for the things Mike mentioned...

I would not worry about the 4 ways kevin since he also looses the 3rd brake lamp. After the brake switch the circuit splits for the tail/3rd lamp. The tail goes thru the 4 ways after that. So I would be looking down stream.

Now had just the tail lamps stopped working then I would certainly be looking at the 4 way--if it was a chev I would give the 4 way a few hard smacks :haha:

I tried to say that.

If the flashers work when the brakes dont then the wiring in the rear is fine.

If the flashers dont work when the brakes dont work, then it could be front or rear.

this info only good on 4 wire red only rear lenses. NONE of this applies if your blinkers are orange

One thing on a newer dodge product, everything goes thru the BCM, 'request' for brake lights and 'request' for 4ways all go thru the BCM, then the bcm then carries out that request....That said, it's still a relatively simple system, and shouldn't be hard to get to the bottom of it and fixed...I would go after the easy stuff first.(things you mentioned earlier!)... IIRC harold's Dodge originally had an amber turn bulb (separate from brake), but I'm not 100%...

Its the same on all the newer chev stuff :awesomework:

what year is this truck? you just said dakota

looking at the wiring diagrams from chrysler if you have an '07 body style the signal comes straight from the switch to the third brake light, no computers or anything just a straight shot,

if you have the older body style it comes from the switch through the fuse block to the third brake light, no computers either.

i would check the wiring harness for pinched places or rubbing marks, if everything looks good i would get a switch, thats the simplest way to explain it.

2006 Dodge Dakota.

Turn, Brake and Driving bulb are the same bulb.

Only Amber bulbs are in front.

Chev, Ford, or Dodge, I'm at the stage where I'd beat the crap out of it anyway... Hell, I have GAP insurance...

This mornings ride in. No brake lights at start up. Stopped for coffee right outside of Sultan, um looky there! Brake lights! Seemed to work all the way into work too. When I parked, they were working.

Did I mention this is frustrating as hell?

so when the brake lights are NOT working, can you turn on the flashers and get the SAME bulb to work with the flashers instead of the brake pedal?

Next time you back in and see no brakes on the wall, click the flashers on and see if you see them then flashing?

If they work, then press the pedal while they are on and see if they light up solid.

report back.

::Salutes:: Yessir! Next time that happens. Hopefully before Saturday.

Did I just say I hope this happens again? I am one sick puppy....

On this new of vehicle the lights won't come on solid---Flashers override the brake lights thru the BCM...

You can still use the old skool way.

Switch switch switch

So since you have an '06 just replace the brake switch... I say this because inside your switch is a dedicated circuit for your center high mounted stop lamp aka third brake light that does not pass through anything it is a single wire circuit. The only thing that controls this is the brake switch... If that light does not work then the signal is being sent from the switch
