Dead Focus

How solid is the trans in it? Body/interior shape? That would play into my decision to put a motor in it...

What do you want for it as is?

We're looking at fixing it. Found a place that can do it for under $2,500, and will warranty their work.

Plus the engine will have a warranty as well...

We did stop by the Ford dealer and found out that a new engine for this car is $3,200. But it does have a 3 year, 100,000 mile warranty.

So, we went to get the aforementioned dead Focus from Waggly Creek and got out first chance to really look at the head.

Well, the valves all seem to be well set in place. None are broken. The odd thing is, the #4 head looks like someone took something to it and beat the living crap out of it. The rim is busted. and this is probably why there's some metal pieces in the cylinder on top of the piston. But there isn't anything that looks like it could have caused all this damage.

Someone is going to say that these metal pieces could have done this, but I'm not sure. I wonder if one of these pieces got in there and seized #4 piston?

Now, from what we can tell, the timing belt is intact. All the teeth are there. The gears look good too. So we're not sure what happened to make the engine self-destruct now.

This is just odd.... I've never seen anything like this before.

Did maybe someone do some work on it prior and accidently drop a bolt or something in the intake? Maybe it made its way into #4

I take it you mean the #4 piston top???Pics, pics, pics, pics!!!

I'm with JOOP---maybe someone did a little tinkering under there, or a little maintenance...or it happened during the last oil change (if he has it done somewhere) ...I've seen it before, on more than one occasion!

The last person to do any real 'tinkering' lives north of me.

Last shop was the Transmission shop a couple weeks ago.

Not sure when the last oil change was.

I'll try and get pictures.

You mean me, right??? When I did the fuel pump???....that was a long time ago (well over a yr ago....)
Do you mean it was at the trans shop about 2 weeks before this all happened???? What was it in the tranny shop for?

I know you didn't do anything, Kevin. But you're the only person that's done any real work on the car since we bought it.

And hell no. I'm not blaming anybody for this. We're just as mystified as the first shop as to why this happened.

The Focus would be back up there right now, if you had the time to work on it and we had the time to get it there... Yeah, we trust you. And you're cheap. We just need to bring a  or :beer: :awesomework:

Tranny shop just did servicing to the transmission. Said everything looks good and strong.

We're going to have the place that has the car now look in #4 and see if he can see anything that shouldn't be there and maybe find out where it may have come from. If we can get pictures, I'll email them to zukkev or Joop for posting.

Sound good?

Yes, I'm cheap, but I'll probably 'donate' to the the cause next month so I can post my own pictures.

BTW, the piston looks good. The head looks like someone beat the crap out of it around the valves. The valves look like, except for some normal scoring from heat, normal.

Well, at least to me, they look normal.

No, I'm not sure of the technical term for where the valves sit in the head, in the dome. But that is where the damage is, except for the assorted holes in the cylinder walls....

Valve seat. :D

Good luck with the repair. It kinda sounds like something dropped into the intake that shouldn't have been.

Somethin like this is gonna cost more than a  or :beer:!!!!:fawkdancesmiley:
Thanks Harold... And I have no problem posting the pics either if you want to email 'em to me...:awesomework:

If need be, I'll send the kid over there tomorrow after work to get some pictures. I've emailed the guy for them, but haven't got a reply yet...

Thanks, Glenn. I knew there was 'technical term'. Beats the heck out of. 'where the valves are in the head....'

I got pictures!

Kevin, Joop.

I can forward them to you. I just need your email addresses!

According to the shop the valve seat came loose. Dropped into the cylinder and thats why the engine went TU.

Pictures are really cool. can't wait for you all to see the damage from one little piece of metal in a cylinder.

Damn!!!:yikes: Haven't seen that cool of carnage in some time!!!! And the valve seat thing does make sense---have actually heard of this happening, but not on a ford yet....

Wait until you see the rest of the pictures.... C'mon Joop. post the rest!

The other set shows why there was coolant in the cylinder. And how the end of the plug got busted off as well.

New song variation of 'Have you driven a Ford... Lately?' to 'Have you pounded a Ford...OMG!'
