Warn 8274 motor upgrade

So... Trying to diagnose my 'click-click' on my winch... Tried a second set of solenoids and that didn't fix it... So pulled the motor off and found a brush had overheated and desoldered the wires going to it... So... Looked for motor options for replacement...

Pretty sure mine was the old stock presto lite 2.5 hp version... And ebay etc sell various replacements for $80-100... But I think they'd be a stock form of replacement... I also found a used motor on eBay for about $50... But who doesn't want 'more power' when upgrading parts!?! Lol

Doing some research, it looks like there's a 4.6 hp replacement motor that will bolt on from the warm 8274-50 (50th anniversary edition)... And that ranged in the $180-200 range...

Lastly, I found the Bosch 68608 motor off of the warn 9.5xp winch is another bolt on upgrade which some say is 6 hp... This seems to be the common replacement that guys do which can run between $280-330... I however found it on amazon dot com for $220... And along with some gift cards I already had, basically got it for free, so I went with them...

Another difference you need to be aware of is that the newer motors come with splined shafts instead of keyed shafts, so I needed replacement pinion for the motor which also fits Into the free-wheel pull-handle... Part number 'warn 15879 splined pinion gear'...

Both the motor (68608) and splined shaft (15879) are en route and should be here tomorrow... Hopefully it will all go together fine, and the rest of the gear train will handle the upgrade of power... Will keep you guys posted as to whether or not the old style (discontinued) solenoids will pull the amperage or need replacing too... But, I'm looking forward to having a reliable winch again that will pull at least with twice as much torque as my old 2.5 hp motor... Hopefully there will be no more 'bogging' under load...
 
Got my XP motor for my XP on Amazondotcom as well...Really happy it works well again...

Resoldering brushes requires some SERIOUS heat... I've tried it with other elec motors and they never stay... The material the brushes are made from look porous enough... But, they also take a LOT of heat and current as they are being used... I wouldn't want my attempt at a backyard fix to fail on the trails... And unreliability is not good when on the trails...

I 'could' have brought the motor to somebody to repair, or bought a used motor for $50, or bought a new motor for $86, or upgraded to a 4.6 horse for $180... Or buy the best upgrade of the Bosch 68608 for $220 plus a $20 pinion... Of which I had $225 in Amazon gift cards already... So, the choice was simple...
 
I just finished a rebuild of a 8274 I picked up last summer for $150. Put a bit more into it than i had planned. I did upgrade the motor to the 9.5xp from Amazon.

I'm not planning on ripping mine all apart and cleaning it up... I just want functional... Besides... It's already got the same 'patina' as the rest of the truck. lol.

Yours looks awesome though! One day I'll have a rig worthy of fancy stuff!
 
Got the motor today... Amazon shipped it usps... Then they shipped the pinion ups... Go figure... Lol

Should've told em it was going on a 8274... They put the sticker on upside down for my application... Hahaha... Oh well... Functionality not looks right?!?

Waiting on the pinion now.... Simple bolt up... Had to find an extra washer to put the ground onto the outter housing bolt... And bend the flange flat on the mounting bracket for the solenoids so it would slide underneath the finned end cap... But other than that... Super simple.

Pinion arrived... Took about 10 seconds to install... Looks good again... Freespool works fine... I may want to reinforce the back of the winch case... Pulling on the motor front to back I can get a little flex out of the case... Will see if it becomes an issue.., I've also heard of guys reinforcing the right side spool case by adding a rod across the back...

I saw those in my research...

But in my 'budget mentality' the furthest I could go for now was the 68608... Lol

Besides... My sammi weighs nothing... So I figured I would be good with just this for now...

Thanks for that info though... Always good to drool on the results of what those with money can do...
 
My warn winch spools in and out again!! Gotta hit the trails soon to see if the solenoids will handle the torque and power of the new motor!
 
Well, winch acted funny when I tried to use it... But, I'll spare you guys my lengthly discussion rant and say this: when I got it home and started to diagnose the issue, I found a intermittent problem which occurred when I pinched the warn wand where bubba had spliced it before me... Long story short, it's a 3 wire warn trigger, and two of the wires were intermittently touching and arcing... Creating the wand to spool out with either direction of the toggle...

And my cable was pretty F'd up, and it wound itself backwards... Too many kinks and frays from winching in the past... So.... She's getting a new cable now! Had one layin around... Looks MUCH better than the one I took off...
 
I started to try and peel back the wires so I could solder and shrink wrap them... The original splice was about 1.5 ft away from the front connection to the winch... I ended up getting to about 6-8 inches away and it was still looking haggard on one wire... Two outta the three looked great, so I half improvised and got it working for now just before full dark set in for the night..

So I think I'll try to pick up another end... Or wire it in the cab... Just spooled in some new line and I'm ready to go try it again... Let's see if it works THIS time! Lol
