Front antiwrap??

As a rule of thumb if wheel hop is a problem when climbing revalve the shocks for more rebound. Put a traction rod above the spring and or outboard if the spring is under the frame Tighten the clamps on the front half of the spring and run a limit clamp on the rear, or no clamps. Verify that you have the spring inclination correct.

alright you cocky fawker.....
I'm with you on most of your observations, though.....there needs to be a clarification here...

wheel hop and spring wrap are NOT the same thing, and while both can (and often are) very destructive, solving one doesn't always solve the other...

case in point.....(and granted, when wheelin' w/ team fat **** you can always use the lame excuse that the trucks are too big and heavy, but all the same concepts apply, they just get exagerated and easier to see when underneith a bigblock crawler)

Hughs truck.....leaves in front, "shackle reverse" (or, shackle proper if you will)....all around, a relatively very flexy setup....
under 'normal' circumstances, it all works surprizingly well....
BUT.....2 instances when......that truck NEEDS something to control front axle/spring wrap....
1.....coming out of the hot tubs in moab.....basically under full get-it conditions....it carried the front end of the truck just a little bit, front end came down still under power (which was what was neccissary to get a fat pig out of a hot tub)....and basically, the frontend came down, "extreme traction" happened for a split second, and instead of an axle, joint, or driveshaft breaking, everything hooked and held together, so the front axle decided it would just rotate instead, and took a main leaf with it.....SNAP...

2......crawling at teh hammerz........get a front tire bound up in a big hole (which there are alot of down there), try to back out of it.....and I've had to call him on it a couple times when spotting to 'give up'.....as the front end has too much traction, I know its not going to break, and the springs just start twisting....

we've drank alot of beers trying to figure out how to propperly, effectively, and cleanly limit his frontend from wrapping......and still don't have an effective method....

its gonna just get links before too long....

Put the shackles in the front. Or... Clamp the springs on the rear of the pack.
Or... add an extra leaf on the rear of the spring pack. Or... some how put a traction arm on from the front (frame side) to the rear (axle end). Make sure to have at least 7" of seperation on the axle end. All of these things with help with the front end dancing around and unloading on climbs. It will also help with the fact you don't need 47" slip driveline. I've tried all of these things on several different vehicles. Some of the toyota guys I run with clamp the springs and it seems to help a whole bunch. But the one truck that we swaped the shackles in the front works much better.
Hope this helps.

I run boomerang shackles up front. I've only had my shackle hang-up once and my led foot laying on the pedal. But it doesn;t matter if you shackle is up front or in the rear , at one point in time either set-up will get the shackles hung up. Its just a matter of time and the obstacle. I'm running with a bent leaf right now too. Not going to change it until it breaks.

Thanks all for the help im gonna try couple things and if i dont work...shackles are gettin put up front again next winter...:corn: :corn:

Go SUA up front , no reverse shackle and you'll be fine. :flipoff:

For years I have been trying to convince myself to do a reverse shackle. But I have seen too many leafs get bent because of a reverse shackle set-up. For examlpe, climbing a ledge and you dont make it. The shackle digs in and doesn't move, bending the leaf. I've seen Pat do it, a couple of Sami's, even Yota's.

That's funny...I broke several front leaf springs until I reversed the shackles. Haven't broken one since I did that 7 years ago. everytime I'd hit an obstacle hard or a ledge or stump I'd bend a spring. The clearance was horrible too...hit or drug on just about everything.

well, you could forgo the whole leaf spring problem, ya know....

I did. sure makes it ride smoooooooth...
better approach angle too.

I really gotta finish bending tube for a front bumper.
