I'd put my money more on the switch needing adjusted though. Been a while since I installed an AW-4 but the PRNDL switch should be like any other, line on the housing line on the piece around the shift shaft need to line up in neutral for the truck to know what gear you're in.

Read closer, the later trucks had 28 guts in a 35 housing. The engine type in your truck and the numbers off the diff tag would go a long way toward us helpin ya.
