A freind of mine just got one out of a truck thinking it was a 5.3. Are these a good motor with decent power and are they the same bell housing both pattern as the 5.3?

There decent. Should be the same bolt pattern. A 5.3 in a rig is kinda over kill IMO, but they are also pretty cheap these days.

In a pickup your going to haul a few things with, the 4.8 mileage savings is not worth the power you give up.
I like my 5.3, and passed on many 4.8s.
But in a offroad rig with gearing, I think a 4.8 would be cool.

My family has had three 5.3l trucks and one 4.8l, and the difference is barely noticeable. I believe it is 285 vs 315 HP, so not a huge difference. Id run it.

the 5.3 has way more power then the 4.8.i have had both. the 4.8 got 14 mpg. my 5.3 get 20 mpg.:fawkdancesmiley:

I drive a 2wd 1/2 ton with the 4.8 everyday. I think its a great reliable motor with plenty of power. I have about 150k miles with no problems. It doesn't feel like a dog even when I have it overloaded with lumber. Run it.
