22re surge

I wanted to start my own thread after seeing Lethe thread on the 3.0 surge issue. My buddy has a 1993 pickup 22re that surges around 1500rpm with no load. It runs fine at that rpm in gear going down the road but just reving it up and holding it there it surges hot or cold. I did a quick look around and couldn't see anything jumping out at me. Ill try and post a video.

Well i feel a little better knowing that i'm not the only one with this problem:redneck: . I haven't found anything online yet about a surge problem only while revving with no load.

Im thinking vacuum leak somewhere... not sure tho. Lots of brake booster leaks online.

I've had brake booster leaks before but they only caused a surge when i applied the brakes. I'm going to start with a coolant temp sensor since my surge only seems to happen when the engine is warm.

It needs a valve adjust to start......that ***** is noisy. I'd start spraying carb clean around the intake. Had lots of lower intake gaskets fail. They don't get replaced as much as the plenum and break down

Unplug the TPS and see if it stops.

I just fixed one yesterday that would not rev above 2200. Like a rev limiter. Just got to 2200 and would stumble right back to idle. Unplug the tps and it ran great. Time for new tps.

The AFM could be to blame also. if it revs up but stumbles at a certian rpm its usually the AFM. Sometimes you can pop it apart and clean the contacts, but allot of times the contacts are worn out where a driver has kept the average rpm for years of driving. Sometimes the arm can be bent to ride on new material.

No problem.

Yes it will clear up- unplugged. When its plugged in it gets bad information. When its unplugged it gets NO information and the computer just fakes it with its own input thats not ideal, but runs OK.

The idle might pick up a bit with the tps unplugged, but its plenty drivable and safe for the engine.

I have been doing some searching and some guys are saying that the TPS can be adjusted using feeler gauges on the idle stop screw and ohm meter on the TPS... I had no idea you could adjust them? Is this true or should I just buy a new one and slap it in?

They are adjustable. It's a pain in the ass on a 22re because the screws that hold it to the throttle body are partially blocked by the t stat housing. If you Google 22re tps adjustment 4crawler has a very detailed write up on how to do it.
