8k winch enough for a 4runner?

Should be. You can always use a snatch block if the winch is bogging.

I have always heard that a good rule of thumb is to double the weight of the vehicle to determine winch size.

I go with 2.5 times the weight personally. But, yes. An 8K has been enough for my truck every time. Ive bogged it pretty good a couple times pulling people out of some THICK mud, so in the future I might go with a 9K or 9.5K, but other than that, an 8K is plenty for "general recovery" IMO.

yah 8K is good enough considering you are almost doubling in size, the real problem is battery, get a good solid deep heavy duty battery or you will have a long miserable day and a dead battery to replace...also do your self a favor and get a high output altinator, the stock 60amp is just a weak link in what you have to upgrade...I know it is never ending...

I haven't had any problems w/ my cheap ass Champion 8K on my Runner and my Optima.

I have a 120 amp alternator, and it is a piece of ****. I would rather have a stock 60 amp and it would probably work better.

Yes I will for sure I wont have it on for another few weeks.. My budget is tapped until I sell some stuff.. Ill start a build thread right now I have the interior stripped down..

EDIT: I see you posted in the thread. You will like it. Good winch for the money. The only problem I had with mine was a one time occurrence where the clutch lever was getting stuck. I had to tap it with a small rock to "pop" it into place. Rolling the drum by hand or even with the motor while holding tension on the lever didnt pop it in like normal. It did it a few times during the same winching operation, and has never done it again. Oh well.

A good quality (read Warn) 8000lbs winch should do fine on a 4runner. Just remember that it is only rated at 8k for the 1st layer of wire rope. At the 4th layer it drops to about 6500lbs.
So if you have a hard pull it will work better with more spooled out. Which also allows for a snatch block as mentioned before.
