I'm looking for a piece of dom or similar tube to make a shifter for my NV5600. I'm not exactly what size I need but I need it to be thick enough so a can drill and tap it to 14mm course thread and still have a little meat left around the threads. And it needs to be around 15-17" long.

I'm located in Hayden, AL but travel to Muscle Shoals, Huntsville, Tuscaloosa, Montgomery and Arab pretty regular.

Uh yeah... No reason in the world it would need to be dom... Heck water pipe would be fine for that.

14 mm threads? Whacha puttin on that thing... My meritor semi Trans shifter is only 1/2" which is about 13 mm.

If you look in the yellow pages for a welding or metal supply shop they should be able to hook you up for free up to about $8.

It will thread onto this part of the shifter and then I will drill and tap the other end for a piece of all thread or cut the head off of a bolt to put a shifter handle on it. I know it doesn't have to be dom but I'm wanting something that has a thick wall that will hold up and not have any flex to it at all.

What size? There are lots of drop pieces on eBay

I'm really not sure, was hoping that somebody who messes with that kind of stuff regularly could tell me.

Its gotta be large enough and have a wall thick enough to be able to be drilled and tapped to 14mm x 1.5 threads.

IE 1/2" scedule 40 pipe or 3/4 tube w 1/8 wall thickness

Or if you want it retarded bomb proof... 1/2" schedule 80 or 1" tube w 1/4" wall thickness.

1/2" ID will tap with out drilling it out. Should be an easy piece to find.

Gotcha. What would be a good od and wall thickness to look for?

Honestly I think you would HATE having a 3/4 or 1" thick wall shifter all the way to the knob...

Would be very heavy and put excessive force against the shift forks causing them to wear faster and also would be more likely to bounce out of gear on a bump.

3/4" or tube will be plenty. I bet you can get that at TSC or Home Depot. Prob .120 wall but .010 won't make much difference while tapping.

Yeah, I almost ordered that earlier today. But I'm worried it is designed just like the factory one. I've already broke two of the factory ones, had one rewelded and broke the weld. I'd rather spend the money on a more permanent solution. I even tried running one of the Core/Hurst shifters on it but didn't like the way it shifted. I thought about ordering another Hurst shifter and running a pistol grip instead of the ball it comes with but they're out of stock. And by the time I buy that shifter and pistol grip for it it'll be over $300.

I've thought about it and wondered if there would be any adverse effects. But they sell heavily weighted shift knobs for these transmissions, I don't think this would be much different than that.

Alright, I'll look into that.

.005 per side. That's makes the hole .010 bigger! :JRich:
I see what you did there..... :spin:

I spose we could argue that since you mentioned .120 wall thickness, that 1/8" being .125 makes me right, and a .010 bigger hole is a change of subject, but then I never argue....... :stir:
