I welded with the stickosaurus for too many years
 
Pretty standard stick machine. I have used my buddies quite a few times and no issues.
 
keep your rod clean, start welding with like a 6013, soft steel before you try any 7018...they work good but take a little more work because of slag....
oh and a good chipping hammer and wire brushes and wheels

It's a good welder, I have the AC/DC version in my garage. It also requires knowledge and experience with stick welding to use it. If you're new to stick welding and expect to use the machine any time soon with success skip it and go buy a wire feed.
 
i have that exact same one, i use it for most everything.
you cannot weld sheet metal with it (cant turn it down low enough).

learn to weld with that AC machine and you'll be able to weld with anything.

its a good value.
 
with 7018AC rod avaliable you can weld most everything you would need to but see if you can get the ac/DC version of the same thing and you have more option avialable and DC is much nicer the weld with...


But have you thought about a wirefeed and use the fluxcore wire for now so you don't need a bottle which can drive up the over all cost of the unit.

actually you can weld sheet metal preferably 12 Gage that's how we build gas tanks its fast it penetrates no leaks it just takes a little technique.
 
For the price of a new AC unit, you should be able to score an AC/DC unit on craigslist. I see them listed pretty often.
 
Thanks for the replies. I got it off craigslist damn near brand new for $140 including gloves, helmet, and a box of 6013 rod. I'm not new to arc welding, just this particular machine. I decided against wire feed because I don't like running out of gas or wire, wire jams, etc. (flux core is crap) Besides, I've got a Ready Welder 2 for the jeep if I really want to use the flux. Thanks again, just went and picked it up and I think it was a great deal for $140.:cheer:
 
You CAN weld steel sheet metal with the DC version of that welder (as thin as 20 gage) and probably with the AC as well though I've never tried it on AC.
 
I would bet you will go through a box of welding rod before a spool of wire or a tank of gas
. granted the cost is more for the mig set up with gas its so much nicer. but thats just me , I haven't arc welded since high school other than trail fixes with two battery's

I shaved the door handles and welded the gate shut and smoothed the latches with an old ac/dc sticker back in school days on my buddies ol bullet side datsun.

Not that I want to do it again.

Yeah among other things I made the hood for my buggy with my stick welder and I'm about to do it again. I have a wire feed machine also but I feel I have more fine control with a stick....Welding thin sheet sucks any way you do it.:booo:
 
Just be carefull welding AC! It is way more likely to zap the **** out of you than DC. It's not as much an issue for a shop welder but I never turn my Bobcat to AC if I'm in the field and it's wet out at all.

You must suck and wire feed welding. :kissmyass:

Welding thin stuff is easy. Anyone in the fab industry should have to work at a muffler shop for 2 years first.
 
Nothing worse than having wet gloves and accidently putting your finger on the end of the new rod your clamping in. ZaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaP!

I was welding inside a PC400 Bucket in the pouring rain one night. Don't kneel in a steel bkt with wet coveralls and try to weld. OUCH:eek:

No I'm just that good with stick.:flipoff: It depends on what exactly you're welding too. A overlap joint with sheet is easy especially heavy stuff like tail pipe. Try a butt joint with 20 gage and add a bit of a gap to make it interesting.
I have certifications for both light gage stick and light gage wire.

First time I tired welding was with a stick. I hated it.. Then my friend convinces me to buy a MIG. Piece of cake. Mig is a lot easier and cleaner.
