So why would Wes Keen not run a skid on the bottom of his buggy? Awful lot of vulnerable parts exposed there. By the looks of the damage to the crossmembers it appears there has never been one on it.

Mostly because Wes don't gaf about much of anything! Just go search YouTube for his past climbs and races in various buggy's and how he uses their poor souls!
