Going wheeling in Clayton OK in August sure sounded like a good time when I called up this gang to meet me on my way home from Colorado this weekend. Heck, it was right on the way home from my family vacation to Silverton Colorado and I already had my buggy with me. Why not?
We assembled up on Thursday night at the Clayton Country Inn just north of Clayton. Working out in the parking lot late in the evening getting our buggies prepped for the following day’s adventure, we were all soaked through with sweat yet eager to try our machines against one of the toughest trails in the Southeast, Middle Slim’s Slope at Green Acres ORV park in Clayton.
Two years ago, Jim Alexander and I were the first two folks to make it up through this extremely challenging trail. We spent over 6 hours and winched 3-4 times each. It was June then, it was August now. I had a brand-new Twisted Customs buggy and since, Jim had added rear-steer to his Sunray Engineering buggy. We were now ready to take it without winches.
Joining us for the adventure was Hal Frost of Austin. Hal was driving his 4-wheel-steer Twisted Customs buggy. Although we have been internet friends for quite some time, this was the first time we were ever able to get together on the same trail. Carl McIntyre and his wife Anna were along as well. Cal too was driving his Twisted Customs buggy. He thought better of going wheeling in August, but he was not going to be left behind, heat or not.
Finally, rounding off the 5-some was my old friend Dan Gable. Dan and I have wheeled together for years, him in his orange FJ-40 and me in my old red FJ-40 Kate. We have not been able to wheel together in over 3 years, so when he and his wife Shakita accepted my invitation to head to Clayton in his new Rokit Enterprises buggy I was stoked.
The next morning we got an early start and nosed into the lower section of Slims at around 9:30 am. We made quick work of this section with its huge boulders and nice waterfall. This is a section that is often run by itself because it has a bail-out just before the middle section where the going really gets tough.
