Coilover Tech

Best way to figure out what a spring is rated for? I figure you compress it with a set amount of weight. Is there an easy way to do it?

Put the spring on a bathroom scale and compress it one inch exactly. See what it reads. Use a press for heavy springs or for precision.

The equation below can be used to estimate the spring rate of a coil spring:

Spring Rate = (G *(dw) to the 4th) / (8 x n x D(to the 3rd))

G = Shear modulus (11,250,000)
dw= coil wire diameter (inches)
n = number of active coils
D = mean coil diameter (inches)

I'm having a hard time getting anything that makes sense from that formula.

Here is one that I know what rate the spring is.

D= 2.96
n= 13
d=.46
Let me know what you come up with.

The ones I need to know at

D=2.925
n=13
d=.425

For the first one, using billavista spring modulus of 11250000,

I got 186 lbs. (.46, 13, 2.96)

Second one: 141 lbs. (.425,13,2.925)

Can anyone tell me if PAC Spring Rates are engraved or stamped on the spring anywhere. The Sharpe on the stickers are long gone.

pac has the rate and length printed on the spring, usually wears off just like eibach, blue coil and all the others.

Sometimes they are inscribed on the flat part on the end

king is the only one that does this to my knowledge.
