Who thinks this is a crime? For example... you die and come 2011 Uncle Sam takes 55% of your net worth. Your children or relatives get the rest. This is nothing new, but I saw it being discussed on TV.

Is this not ****ed up? It's like gettin charged for dyin. A dollar earned should be a dollar kept. I think my head actually is going to explode.

55%? Where'd you get that number?

It's just a capital gains tax. It is not levied on the person who died, that's just stupid. It's levied on the person who receives it.

And yes, it's fawking bull****. I should be able to GIVE my own money to anyone I want without the government getting involved.

If you figure the amount of taxes you pay while alive and this, we basically work to pay taxes.

Property taxes, income taxes, sales tax, gas tax, vehicle registration taxes and fees......................soon we will be paying a health insurance tax too. And taxes go up every year.

From About.Com

Prior to the estate tax reduction, estates were taxed at rates beginning at 37 percent and going as high as 55 percent. Generally, the estate tax only applied to assets exceeding $1 million.
Included in President Bush's tax cuts, however, was a provision to phase out the estate tax rate over the next few years. For families with large real estate holdings such as farms that have been held for generations or small businesses, this stroke of good luck will ensure that assets are passed onto posterity without Uncle Sam taking a majority of the bounty. This would be accomplished in two ways: 1.) by raising the amount exempt from the estate tax rate, and 2.) lowering the estate tax rate itself.

According to the IRS literature, an estate tax filing need only be made if the value of an estate exceeds the following amounts:

2005: First $1,500,000 in assets
2006-2008: First $2,000,000 in assets
2009: First $3,500,000 in assets

In addition, the maximum estate tax rate applied to the amounts in excess of these figures are as follows:

2005: 47 percent
2006: 46 percent
2007- 2009: 45 percent

In 2010, the estate tax rate drops to zero percent; if you die in that year, your heirs would not pay taxes, even if you passed on $20 billion!

One caveat: Congress ensured that the law sunsets in 2011. That is, on January 1st, 2011, the estate tax rate will return to its pre-Bush levels. Practically speaking, this means the difference between dying on December 31, 2010 and January 1, 2011 can mean 55 percent of your estate if you are person of means!

:eeek:WTF, is this like some kind of incentive for rich people to die next year?

"If you're rich, and you're gonna die, better make it next year, or we'll steal all your money."

The thing that gets me is that that money was alredy taxed. Taxed when it was earned, taxed when it was spent, and whatever you recieved will be taxed again when you as the recipient spend it.

It is what it is.

Obama and the Dems repealed Bush's tax cut, Republicans believe people should be less taxed and Dems believe that we should give all our money to the government and let take care of us.

I don't see the problem, the majority voted for "Change" and everyone knew that Obama wanted to spread the wealth around, this is just a way of doing it.

Because all the rich people are going to want to DIE with the way this world is going

net cost to them equals what approximately $0.45 for a nifty bullet? That sounds like great 'Change' well spent

This is a big reason that family businesses become non family businesses. The kids can't afford to pay the tax and keep it going.

They just need to form a corp. there is a huge loophole in the Estate tax, but it needs to be done before the person dies to get the benefit.

Not all the small guys out there thought of how to beat .gov they just figured they would be able to hand it down. Now you have to look out on how not to get screwed at every turn.

That's exactly right, it's to the point that you need a CPA to be a decent business man these days, I have a great CPA that has helped me though my different business ventures, and they are well worth the money. We have such a massive tax code system that even the government people screw up, we need to go to a flat tax, or "fair tax" system.
