FULL HYDRO ISSUE

I HAVE READ A TON OF THREADS ON HERE BUT NONE ADDRESSED MY ISSUE. CAN U GUYS HELP?
RESERVOIR WAS VERY HOT TODAY. STARTED PUKING FLUID OUT OF THE CANISTER. SET UP IS A FARM SUPPLY TYPE SINGLE RAM. OIL COOLER IS MOUNTED ON FRONT OF RADIATOR. DO I NEED A SMALL "PUSHER" FAN?

I HAD FULL HYDRO ON ANOTHER RIG USING FACTORY RESERVOIR AND IT NEVER DID THIS. THE 2 DIFFERENCES IN THAT RIG AND THIS ARE THE OTHER RIG HAD A PSC RAM AND 39'S. THIS HAS FARM TYPE RAM AND 42'S.

ANY THOUGHTS? HERE IS A PIC OF THE RESERVOIR.

When using a single ended cylinder you need to have a larger reservoir than when using a double ended. The reason for that is the fluid level changes depending on whether the cylinder is fully retracted or fully extended due to the space the rod itself takes up. It's possible you just overheated the fluid which causes it to expand. The fact you gave to run the reservoir so full because of the fluctuating level may be a factor. Also could be a restriction in the return. That will definitely cause an overheating situation. Just a few things to consider.
 
That looks very similar to the reservoir I picked up at summit. If it is, is it not a sealed cap? They one i picked up is airtight ( i hope) , my plan is just to put it in line coming from the cooler back to my stock reservoir, like mentioned above I have had my steering fluid come out of tha cap of the stock reservoir, because I put too much fluid in, and when the shaft goes all the way in the single ended Ram the fluid moves up a good bit. . Was actually going to put my remote reservoir in line today, the only purpose for mine is for more fluid, if anyone thinks that this may be a bad idea please let me know, and I'm hoping that I'm right about the location of where to put it. Not trying to hijack thread, when I saw that reservoir it looked just like the one i picked up.. What fluid are you running?
 
I cant stress enough how much of a difference it will make using a good plate type cooler with a fan, and using a good synthetic fluid.

I don't think that would be a good idea. What if it loses it's air tight-ness. Then you lose your fluid and steering. That being in line may also cause increased restriction to your actual reservoir which will cause overheating. I would probably just fab a larger reservoir that feeds the factory reservoir via gravity. Plumb your return into the highest reservoir. Just a thought.

My system system is compressed. The bottom of the reserve has a filter that runs to a cylinder typed cooler. All lines need to be big enough to allow proper flow. I run Gm power steering fluid in mine.

CAP CAME LOOSE TODAY. ITS A RADIATOR STYLE VS SCREW ON. NOT A TIGHT FIT AT ALL. HOW HOT SHOULD THE CAN BE? I GUESS I HAVE NEVER HAD THE NEED TO FEEL ONE BEFORE.

I RUN NORMAL FLUID, NOT SYNTHETIC. I WILL LOOK INTO THAT AND THE SIZE OF RETURN LINE.

ALSO NOTICED TODAY THE STEERING GOT HARDER. ASSUME DUE TO IT BEING SO HOT?

DO I NEED TO CHANGE RAM TO A "BETTER" ONE OR DO YOU ALL AGREE THERE IS ANOTHER ISSUE TO ADDRESS FIRST?
 
I'd bet a fan on the cooler won't fix the problem, Over filling the tank or air in the system is what I'd look at. Jack the front wheels off the ground, pull the cap off of the tank and cycle the steering several times....keep an eye on the fluid level, this will give you a good idea on how much fluid it takes to make it work witout sucking air into the system.....when the level is right, doing this also bleeds the air out of the system.
 
GREAT INFO. I WILL START WITH TRYING TO BLEED IT. I BEEN MESSING WITH CAP AND ITS JUST NOT A TIGHT FIT. NOT SURE HOW TO ADDRESS THAT YET. WILL BLEED AND GO FROM THERE.

I'm having hydro steering problems on my double ended ram setup. Although, my sypmtoms are a little different than yours, I am going to drain my standard ps fluid out of it and replace it with Royal Purple full synthetic as one of the first measures of trouble shooting.
 
And i think if you have your cooler mounted to the radiator, move it! that means automatically its goin to get 180-200 degrees, mount it all alone somewhere, and put a fan on it! it will live a good and cool life!

But both PSC Performance and Howe Performance say to use power steering fluid. Guess if you were using a hydraulic pump rather than a power steering pump, it would make since. I use KSE Elixer Steering Fluid.

I was under the impression removing it was ideal also, I think it was wyatt or kelly that mentoned and gave good info on running it through the rad as better than not... Cant seem to find the thread.

Im running royal purple through the TG pump/hydro system per their instructions and a separate cooler with fan, but my orbital is next to my header collector. Since the fan, its been running smoother and no noise. I'd like to run KSE but would hate for TG to not warranty due to incorrect fluid :dunno:

TG website only recommends Royal Purple Full Synthetic, doesn't require it....it says standard is fine too, basically. That's why I just put regular power steering fluid in it this go round. But I'm sure the characteristics are enough to make a huge difference between the two. I don't think you're going to void any warranty by using the KSE stuff, unless it's semi synthetic.

From TG's website.

"Never use ATF fluid, or a semi-synthetic blend. This will void the warranty. OK to use standard power steering fluid or a full synthetic. Royal Purple fully synthetic power steering fluid recommended."

I just bought a pump and resi for my full hydro and PSC recommended Swepco 715 fluid for the 1405X pump they even sell it!! I didn't buy any I'm going to try to find it local but that's the first I had heard of using it, I have been using BG power steering fluid with no issues but I guess I'm going to try to find the Swepco 715
